This Memorial Day, we observe a solemn time of reflection on the true significance of this occasion. Beyond the transition into summer, Memorial Day serves as a sacred remembrance of the men and women of our Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedom.
We specifically honor the legacy of individuals such as Chief Boatswain’s Mate Quincy Hightower Truett, the great-uncle of our shop manager. On January 20, 1969, in Vietnam, Chief Truett demonstrated extraordinary valor by maneuvering his vessel under fire to rescue shipmates from a burning boat. Despite sustaining mortal wounds, he continued his rescue efforts until the end. For his heroism, he was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross.
We also recognize Private George Watson, the first African American to earn the Distinguished Service Cross, who remained aboard a sinking ship during World War II to ensure his comrades could escape. Furthermore, we remember 1st Lt. Alexander Bonnyman Jr., a Medal of Honor recipient who fearlessly led his Marines during the assault on Tarawa.
These accounts represent the thousands of stories that remind us of the profound cost of liberty. To all fallen service members and the Gold Star families who endure their absence, we offer our deepest gratitude.
Your sacrifice and theirs will never be forgotten. We remain forever grateful and strive to live lives worthy of the freedom they defended.
THANK YOU 🫡🇺🇲
