2021 tax filing season set to begin
February 12

The IRS will begin accepting and processing 2020 tax year returns on Friday, Feb.12, 2021.

People who are ready to file can begin filing their tax returns.

Software providers are accepting completed tax returns now and holding them until the IRS begins processing returns on Friday, Feb.12.

The quickest way for taxpayers to get a tax refund is by filing electronically and choosing direct deposit for their refund.

Most refunds should be available in taxpayer bank accounts or on debit cards by the first week of March, if they choose direct deposit and there are no other issues with their tax return.

By law, the IRS cannot issue refunds before mid-February for tax returns that claim the earned income tax credit or ACTC.

The IRS must hold the entire refund — even the portion not associated with EITC or ACTC. This helps ensure taxpayers receive the refund they deserve and gives the agency more time to detect and prevent errors and fraud.

To make filing easier, taxpayers should:

File electronically and use direct deposit for the quickest refunds.

Check IRS.gov for the latest tax information.

There is no need to call the IRS.

Those who may have been eligible for stimulus payments should carefully review their eligibility for the recovery rebate credit.

Most people received Economic Impact Payments automatically and those who received the maximum amount don’t need to include any information about their payments when they file.

They received the full amounts of both Economic Impact Payments if:

Their first Economic Impact Payment was $1,200 for individuals; $2,400 married filing jointly for 2020, plus $500 for each qualifying child born in 2020.

Their second Economic Impact Payment was $600 for individuals; $1,200 married filing jointly for 2020, plus $600 for each qualifying child born in 2020.

People who didn't receive the payments or only received partial payments may be eligible to claim the recovery rebate credit when they file their 2020 tax return.

Even if they are normally not required to file a tax return.
Tax preparation software will help taxpayers figure the amount.

Taxpayers should remember that stimulus payments they received are not taxable, and don’t reduce the amount of their refund.

The deadline to file 2019 tax returns and pay any tax owed is Wednesday, April 15, 2020. More than 150 million individual tax returns for the 2019 tax year are expected to be filed, with the vast majority of those coming before the traditional April tax deadline.

Taxpayers who support dependents should check their withholding now

Taxpayers who support dependents that can’t be claimed for the child tax credit should head over to the Withholding Calculator on IRS.gov and do a “paycheck checkup” ASAP. They can use the calculator to make sure they are having their employers withhold the right amount of tax from their paychecks this year.

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which was passed last year, added a new tax credit: the credit for other dependents. This new credit is just one law change that can affect a family’s tax situation this year. So, checking and adjusting withholding now is important to do because it can prevent an unexpected tax bill and even penalties next year at tax time.

The Credit for Other Dependents is available for dependents for whom taxpayers cannot claim the newly expanded Child Tax Credit. These dependents may include dependent children who are age 17 or older at the end of 2018, or parents or other qualifying relatives supported by the taxpayer. Families with qualifying children under the age of 17 should first review their eligibility for the expanded Child Tax Credit, which is larger.

The new credit:

Offers up to $500 per eligible dependent. Begins to phase out at $400,000 for joint filers, and $200,000 for other taxpayers.

If a taxpayer needs to adjust their paycheck withholding amount, doing so sooner rather than later means there’s more time for withholding to take place evenly throughout the year. Waiting until later means there are fewer pay periods to make the tax changes.

The Withholding Calculator is the most accurate way for most taxpayers to help determine their correct withholding amount. The tool allows taxpayers to enter their expected 2018 income, deductions, adjustments and credits – including the new credit for other dependents.

The Internal Revenue Service is the nation's tax collection agency and administers the Internal Revenue Code enacted by Congress.

March 15 Filing Deadline for Partnerships and S Corp Returns

The filing deadline for calendar year partnerships and S corporations is March 15, 2017.

These returns must be filed (e-filed or postmarked) by midnight (local time) on March 15, 2017.

Fiscal year returns will be due the 15th day of the 3rd month following the year end. Both partnership and S corporation returns are allowed a six month extension, if needed.

Payment must accompany the return or extension if there are taxes due. An extension of time to file does not extend the time to pay taxes that are due.

April 18 Filing Deadline for Individual, C Corp, Estate, and Trust Returns

The deadline for filing calendar year individual, C corporation, estate, and trust returns is April 18, 2017.

Calendar year C corporations are now eligible for an automatic six month extension.
