Here's a scenario we see more than people expect.

Someone passes away with a perfectly valid will. But their retirement account still names an ex-spouse as beneficiary. Their home was only in their name, so it triggers probate. Their joint bank account passes automatically to whoever was on it - which may or may not be who the will intended.

A will can only govern assets titled in your name alone. Everything else follows its own rules - beneficiary designations, joint ownership, trust agreements. If those aren't coordinated, the will can't fix it.

Something I find myself explaining a lot: a will and an estate plan are not the same thing.

A will tells the court what you wanted. A trust, a power of attorney, updated beneficiary designations - those are what actually make sure your wishes are carried out the way you intended, without a court involved, and without your family having to wait.

All wills go through probate. That's not a flaw in your will - it's just how wills work. And for a lot of people, once they understand that, the question shifts from "do I need a will?" to "do I need more than a will?"

Most people think of estate planning as home, bank accounts, retirement funds. The tangible stuff.

But what about the things you've created? The course content that still earns income. The business logo and brand you built from scratch. The stories you wrote that no one has read yet. The proprietary process that makes your company run.

These are real assets- sometimes growing more valuable over time and in most estate plans, they're completely invisible.

Back to school season is coming and we want to make sure every child in foster care starts the year with what they need.

We've partnered with The Foster Alliance to support their Back-to-School Drive, a supply collection effort reaching more than 5,000 children in foster care across Arizona and New Mexico. And we're making it easy to get involved right here in Flagstaff.

You can drop off school supplies at our office during business hours. We'll also have a collection box at our Taps & Trusts event on August 5that the DoubleTree by Hilton - so if you're joining us that evening, bring something along.

Drop-off deadline is Friday, August 7th - but if you need a little more time, we'll still take it.

Most needed items include backpacks, notebooks, pencils, crayons, markers, folders, scissors, and more. A full backpack for one child runs about $58 but every single item makes a difference.

The pitch for DIY estate planning is hard to argue with on the surface. Fast, affordable, no lawyer required.

Here's what those services don't mention: estate planning laws are state-specific, and most online forms aren't actually tailored to Arizona. Generic language can void a document entirely. A trust that isn't properly funded still sends your family to probate. And when your life changes, a remarriage, a new grandchild, a business, the form doesn't follow up.

Done wrong, a DIY estate plan doesn't save money. It just moves the cost to your family, at the worst possible time.

Flagstaff monsoon season brought the cool air this week and Patricia and Sharon were ready for it.

Our Director of Operations and Client Development Coordinator took their meeting outside to Sosta, one of our favorite local coffee shops and a spot we love for hosting events. They didn't plan the matching white blouses and scarves. It just happened. We think it's perfect.

Here's to good coffee, good people, and a break in the heat.
