Today is National Donut Day, established in 1938 by the Salvation Army to honor their brave volunteers, known as "Doughnut Lassies". During World War I, these women were sent to the front lines in France and fried donuts in soldiers' helmets to boost troops' morale. The day also served as a fundraiser to help those in need during the Great Depression.
If you need an excuse to indulge in a doughnut, today is the perfect day to celebrate with a delicious treat!
