The paperwork is the part nobody warns you about.
When a parent's health changes suddenly, the medical side gets all the attention. What actually stalls families is the admin. Which documents exist. Who is allowed to sign what. Where the insurance information lives. Who has permission to speak to the doctor.
Gather these before you need them:
1. Healthcare power of attorney
2. Financial power of attorney
3. A current medication list with dosages
4. Insurance cards and policy numbers
5. Every doctor's name and what they treat
None of it is complicated. All of it is miserable to assemble in a hospital corridor at two in the morning.
The Caregiver Survival Guide for Aging Parents walks through the rest. Link in the first comment.
