Teaching trademark law as an adjunct professor at Georgetown Law taught me at least as much as my students learned from me. The biggest lesson: good questions are a sign of real understanding and curiosity. The students who asked the most questions were consistently the ones grasping the material best. Lesson 2: real expertise is being able to distill something complicated into plain, approachable language. Trademark scams in the form of imposter attorneys are hurting more business owners than you'd think – people who've already paid real money and gotten nothing of value in return. The easiest red flag to watch for: a "nice, shiny" website full of generic stock photos with no real detail – no names, no office location, no examples of actual past work. If you look closely and can't find who these people actually are, that's a big warning sign. Before you hire anyone to help with your trademark, vet them the same way you would any professional: real names, a real location, verifiable licenses, and real experience you can check.
