This World Breastfeeding Week, we’re celebrating the strength of lactating parents—and reminding everyone that the law is on their side. In New York and beyond, you have the right to breastfeed in public and pump at work. Know your rights. Support parents. Normalize breastfeeding.

This month, we honor the trailblazers who dared to demand dignity in a world that tried to silence them. We celebrate LGBTQ+ joy, but we also recognize the work that remains — from fighting anti-trans laws to dismantling systemic oppression. Pride didn’t start with a parade — it started with resistance.

In 1969, the LGBTQ+ community fought back against police brutality at the Stonewall Inn. That night wasn’t about visibility or branding, it was about survival, resistance, and liberation. We owe our Pride to them.

Police raids on LGBTQ+ bars were common at the time and often involved harassment and violence. On this particular day, when the NYPD raided the Stonewall Inn, the crowd—made up largely of drag queens, trans women, gay men, le****ns, and homeless LGBTQ+ youth—decided to fight back. What began as a spontaneous act of resistance quickly escalated into a series of protests that lasted for six days and drew national attention to the widespread mistreatment of LGBTQ+ individuals.

🔎 Legal Trailblazer Spotlight: Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander 🔎

Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander understood that justice isn’t just about the law—it’s about ensuring equal opportunity in every workplace. As the first Black woman to practice law in Pennsylvania, she fought tirelessly for economic justice, fair employment, and civil rights.

Her legacy reminds us why strong legal advocacy matters in protecting workers' rights and ensuring businesses operate with equity and fairness. At J Morgan Levy Law, we are committed to providing businesses and individuals with the legal guidance they need to build just, compliant, and thriving workplaces.

Next up in our Breaking Barriers series... Rosalie Whitney – Most Known for Protecting Small Business Owners!

📖 Rosalie Whitney was one of New York’s first female lawyers—and a fierce advocate for small business owners and workers. At a time when legal resources were dominated by powerful corporate interests, she dedicated her career to ensuring small businesses and everyday employees had the same protections under the law.

💡 Her work reminds us that strong legal support isn’t just for big companies—it’s essential for every business, no matter the size. Today, small business owners face challenges like unfair contracts, employment disputes, and complex regulations. The right legal guidance ensures you’re protected and positioned for growth.

💬 Have you ever signed a contract you later regretted? What did you learn from the experience?

💡 “If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.” – Shirley Chisholm

Few people embodied the spirit of breaking barriers like Shirley Chisholm—the first Black woman elected to Congress and the first woman to seek the Democratic nomination for President. She didn’t wait for permission to lead. She challenged the system, fought for equity, and made space where there was none.

🔥 Her lesson for business, law, and leadership? Advocate for yourself. Make bold moves. Don’t wait for an invitation.

Whether you’re a small business owner negotiating contracts, a leader shaping workplace policies, or someone pushing for change in your field—Chisholm’s words still ring true. If the space you need doesn’t exist, create it.

💬 When have you had to ‘bring your own folding chair’—creating opportunities when doors weren’t opening for you? Drop your story in the comments! ⬇️

🔥Kate Stoneman—the woman who refused to take "no" for an answer.

In 1886, Stoneman made history as the first woman admitted to the New York State Bar, but it wasn’t easy. Even after passing the bar exam, she was denied admission simply because she was a woman. Instead of accepting the status quo, she lobbied to change the law itself—paving the way for generations of women in law.

💭 Kate Stoneman didn’t just break barriers—she changed the system. Her story reminds us that legal protections, fair policies, and strong advocacy matter—not just in history, but today.

🔹 If you could rewrite one rule or policy in your industry to make it more fair, what would it be?

Let’s celebrate the women who break barriers and create new rules. Drop your thoughts in the comments! ⬇️

🚀 Judith Kaye’s Legacy – Leading with Vision

Judith Kaye didn’t just break barriers as the first female Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals—she reshaped how the legal system serves people. From pioneering reforms in domestic violence cases to advocating for equal access to justice and more inclusive jury selection, she understood that laws should evolve with society’s needs.

🔹 Leadership is about more than making decisions—it’s about making the right ones. Whether you’re setting workplace policies, negotiating contracts, or structuring your business for growth, legal strategy should be part of your leadership vision.
