What will happen to me?

Every person involved in a divorce is worried about what happens next in life after the divorce decree. The parties want to be able to move on in life and enjoy their children, the fruits of their labor and have a roof over their heads. It’s natural to have significant anxiety about what the future may bring after divorce.

But there is life after a divorce. Whether a person uses this opportunity to move into the next stage of life and embrace the changes, or whether they engage in self-destructive behaviors, is completely within their control.

At the end, if you choose to move forward, life will begin again.

Successful Parenting after Splitting: The secret to successful co-parenting post-divorce is simple but hard to execute:

Make your child/children your main focus. The key is to always think and act with the best interest of the children in mind.

Make sure you honor your ex’s relationship with your children. Do not bad mouth one another in front of your kids or try to purposely make them angry or resent the other parent. If both parents are on the same page about respecting each other around the children it will make for a smoother transition into raising your children separately.

Also when you are both on the same page about practices, plays, sport games or any other activity your child is involved in and who will taking care of each activity keeps each parent sharing responsibility. Make sure to not be too harsh on your ex.

Give them leeway to do things differently. Don’t automatically assume you are right and they are wrong. What works in your house, might not work in your ex’s house. You don’t want your kids to think “she’s the good one and he’s the bad one.”

Approach managing discipline as well as happy times as partners and you will see how less stressful it will be on your children.

What are the most commonly used fault grounds?

Cruel and abusive treatment
This is the most common fault ground for divorce. You need to show that something your spouse knowingly did or didn't do caused you harm or upset. Acts of physical abuse are cruel and abusive treatment. Sometimes certain forms of mental cruelty may be enough. You have to show it caused you physical harm, for example, your spouse’s drinking and staying out all night caused you headaches and stomach problems. How long it takes to complete a divorce varies with each case.

Utter desertion continued for one year
Your spouse left the marital home voluntarily and without your forcing him to leave. He or she left, has no intention of returning home, and has not lived with you for at least one year before the date of your filing the complaint for divorce.

Collaboration and Mediation Compared.

Collaboration offers a middle ground between mediation and full adversarial litigation. In mediation, the parties meet with one neutral mediator. The collaborative setting, the parties are never "on their own;" each party is fully and individually represented throughout the process. The collaborative process provides the parties with added support, it may be a more comfortable option some clients. Collaborative attorneys can also prepare all necessary paperwork for their clients and, attend the required court hearing where the divorce agreement is presented to the court for approval. http://ow.ly/HMD4b

What Are My Rights?

Questions about what your rights in a divorce are just as complicated as process questions. There’s no quick or easy answer about the rights a party has to particular property, or to parenting time, or decision-making.

With regard to property, assets and debts, Connecticut along with 8 other states are equitable division state. This means a divorce court looks at the “fairness” of a distribution.

Some of the things courts consider include the length of the marriage, whether the divorcing couple has children, the spouses’ incomes, their earning potential after the marriage has ended, and if one spouse stayed home to raise the kids.
