LSNV would like to take a moment to celebrate the Senate confirmation of Ms. Rosie Hidalgo as the Director of the Office on Violence Against Women at the Department of Justice! Ms. Hidalgo worked with LSNV as a staff attorney from 1995 to 1999. She provided legal representation to low-income children and families in the areas of special education, child welfare, disabilities, and family law. We’re proud to have her as an alum and wish her the best of luck in her new role with the U.S. Department of Justice!

Last week, we had the pleasure of reuniting with some LSNV Alums! It was a rewarding experience getting to chat with a few generations of LSNVs finest including those who were with us at the very beginning and those who are new alums. We are also very excited to announce that this event was just the beginning of our LSNV Alumni Society! The Alumni Society will be comprised of former staff and board members, and we are looking forward to many more exciting events!

Need a refresher on AOD? Well, you sign up for a date that you are available to go to court, and by doing so, you are committing to handle pro bono LSNV protective order referrals that are set for a hearing on your date. We do not expect you to take every referral to court but to assess the cases for merit and at least provide advice to petitioners. Due to the quick turnaround between the protective order petitions and the hearing date, our office is not able to assess the merit of the referrals.
When we refer you a case, we will provide information on scheduling an interpreter, if needed, and how to report back closing information. (The closing information we need is the case outcome, was it contested or not, and hours spent on the case.) On average there are 2 cases, but I’ve seen as many as 5 on a given day. Our staff attorneys are available for mentorship and to answer procedural and strategy questions. Just coordinate with our office if you need assistance. If a scheduling conflict arises, please notify our office ASAP so we can try and find coverage.

LSNV's Justice League team had another strong showing at the always-fun Fairfax Law Foundation Heroes v. Villains 5K Run. Everybody did great on this beautiful morning. Some of the notable showings included Attorney Colleen O'Conor coming in second place among all women runners (and ninth overall!), Attorney Elizabeth Crego coming in third in her age group, and Executive Director Jim Ferguson coming in first in his age group. We were pleased to be joined in our post-race celebration by LSNV Board Member (and Virginia State Bar President-Elect) Chidi James!

Meet Sabrina Wear, LSNV’s Deputy Director for Advocacy!
The Deputy Director for Advocacy is one of LSNV’s two deputy director roles, and the position focuses on the delivery of client services and engagement with the community. In addition to overseeing our assistance to individual clients, the Deputy Director for Advocacy also leads our impact advocacy, focusing on efforts that more broadly improve equal access to justice throughout Northern Virginia.
Sabrina Wear has been serving as LSNV’s Deputy Director for Advocacy since October. She brings great experience and credentials to the role.
Sabrina, who is a graduate of the College of William & Mary and University of North Carolina School of Law, practiced law for 18 years before joining LSNV – all of that time in the legal-aid/access-to-justice arena. Fourteen of those years were at Maryland Legal Aid Bureau (MLA), where she served in a supervisory capacity for almost 10 years. Sabrina also worked as a Staff Attorney with Community Legal Services and a Managing Attorney with the DC Bar Pro Bono Program. Sabrina is proficient in Spanish and Portuguese. She and her family are long-time Northern Virginia residents.
We are excited that many of you will have the opportunity to collaborate with Sabrina in the weeks and months ahead.

How can I get ahold of a supervisor?
My husband and I have been calling for WEEKS to try and get an update on our application and to find out what’s going on. No one has called back.
Court is on the 19th, we still have no lawyer. The woman we just spoke to said that she sent an email to the supervisor but it could be days before we hear anything.
We live in FL. Days is not an option. We can’t be told last minute that we can’t get assistance and need to reschedule. It doesn’t work that way. It’s a 16 hour drive. We have to get a rental car. We have to take off work. We need NOTICE. And so do the courts if we’re asking for a postponement!
Like this is ridiculous! We were told that some letter and email were sent out; they were sent to god knows who but it wasn’t the address or email we gave them. No one can tell us what it says.
Our son was kidnapped and we need HELP. when we told the woman on the phone this, she laughed! Like what in the world is funny about that?? Who laughs at talk of a kidnapped child? Are you kidding?
How do we talk to somebody who can help? How do we get ahold of a supervisor who can actually tell us what is going on? ASAP.
