As we sail through June, I know many of us are fully immersed in summer mode – soaking up the sunshine, firing up the grill, and cherishing those precious family moments. I'm certainly doing my part to enjoy the beautiful weather!

But as a busy parent myself, I also know how quickly summer breezes turn into autumn routines.

Soon enough, backpacks will be packed and school bells will be ringing. For me, this transition always highlights the importance of being truly prepared. Big life moments like the back-to-school season are more than just dates on the calendar; they're junctures. As kids grow and transition (especially those heading off to college!), their needs, your responsibilities, and your financial landscape evolve. This makes it the most vital time to create or update your will and trust to ensure you’re accounting for what life's unexpected changes could bring.

That's why I'm excited to offer a free webinar: Back-to-School Season: Estate Planning Basics for Busy Parents. Tuesday, August 19th at 9:30 am ET. Can't make it? Register and get access to the replay.

In this engaging session, I’ll walk you through the essential steps, explaining complex topics in a clear, straightforward way. You'll discover how a well-crafted, personalized plan can safeguard your children's well-being, protect your hard-earned assets, and ensure your family's wishes are honored no matter what the circumstances.

Key Takeaways:
1. Know the crucial difference between a will and a trust.
2. Understand why avoiding probate at all costs is so important.
3. Be prepared for the financial transition of sending kids off to college and beyond.
4. Confidently recognize why an attorney's personalized guidance is indispensable, far outweighing generic online options.

Don't let the back-to-school rush sidetrack you from what's important. This webinar is a crucial appointment for your calendar. Invest just one hour to gain invaluable clarity and confidence for your future.

We often hear "estate planning" and picture stacks of formal documents or conversations reserved for a distant future.

But what if I told you that the peace of mind an estate plan offers could extend to your next vacation, or even ensure you have access to your college student's medical records when they're away?

It's a common misconception that estate planning is solely for the wealthy or the elderly.

The truth is, it's a vital tool for everyone, regardless of age or net worth, helping navigate life's inevitable twists and turns.

Let's debunk some common myths and reveal how a robust estate plan truly protects your legacy, both today and tomorrow.

Myth: Estate planning is only about planning for after death.
Fact: Estate planning covers life activities. If you’re unable to address household or financial matters during your lifetime - say while you’re on a 2-week European river cruise, you’ve already empowered an Agent under a
General Durable Power of Attorney to act on your behalf. Or, this is for parents of college students, a HIPAA waiver will ensure you have access to all of your child’s medical records while they’re away.

Myth: Only wealthy people need estate planning.
Fact: Everyone, regardless of their net worth, can benefit from having an estate plan. It helps ensure your assets are distributed according to your wishes, protects your loved ones, and can save them time, money, and stress.

Myth: A Will is enough.
Fact: While a Will is an important part of estate planning, it's not the only tool you need. A comprehensive estate plan may include a trust, power of attorney, and healthcare directive.

Myth: Estate planning is only for older people.
Fact: It's never too early to start planning for the future. Young adults with significant assets, such as homes or businesses, should consider creating an estate plan to protect their loved ones.

Myth: Estate planning is too complicated and expensive.
Fact: While estate planning can be complex, a qualified attorney can help you create a plan that meets your specific needs. The cost of estate planning is often offset by the savings and peace of mind it provides.

I had a really insightful conversation with someone the other day that highlighted how much confusion there can be around Wills and Trusts.

We were talking about how, even when we set up a comprehensive Trust, we still draft a Will – what we call a "pour-over will."

The purpose of that Will isn't what many think. It acts as a kind of safety net, ensuring any assets that weren't formally transferred into the Trust, or lacked a beneficiary, will still eventually end up in the Trust. Yes, those specific assets would go through probate on their way there, but they ultimately flow into your private Trust.

What I think is often misunderstood is that the Trust is where the details of "who gets what" are truly laid out, and those details aren't made public.

The Will, in this context, primarily serves to direct those remaining assets to the Trust. It's a common misconception that a Will alone dictates everything or avoids probate for all assets. It also brought up the point that you can't fully disinherit a spouse, which is another crucial piece of the puzzle.

This Military Appreciation Month, let's wholeheartedly celebrate the incredible dedication and sacrifice of our service members and their families. Their courage and commitment protect us all, and their strength inspires me daily.

Understanding that the demands of military life extend to their loved ones, The Bryk Law Firm deeply appreciates the unique challenges they face and recognizes that peace of mind at home is paramount.

In our commitment to supporting these incredible families, we want to share a few key steps you can take today to build a strong foundation for your future security:

Understand the Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP): Take a moment to learn about this vital resource that can provide long-term financial security for service members and family. Explore the information available through Military OneSource and DFAS.

1. Review & Update Beneficiary Designations: Ensure wishes are clearly reflected by regularly checking and updating beneficiaries on the SBP, life insurance (including SGLI/FSGLI), and retirement accounts (like the TSP). These designations are critical! Updating one does not necessarily mean all have been updated.

2. Have Open Family Discussions: Start the conversation. Talking openly with spouses, partners and older children about future plans and wishes can bring clarity and reassurance to everyone.

3. Organize the Essentials: Gather the important documents – military IDs,
insurance details, passwords, financial information (one statement for each account), etc. – and keep them in a secure place known to a trusted family member.

Thank you again to our incredible military families for your extraordinary service and sacrifice!

Happy Mother's Day to all the incredible moms! I know firsthand that the hardest – and most rewarding – job in the world is nurturing and raising our families.

The future can feel both distant and full of possibilities when they're little – even our fur babies. I often here how difficult it can be to plan for what seems so far away. Yet, in the blink of an eye, time escapes us and life throws unexpected challenges we wished we prepared for, highlighting the importance of securing their tomorrows.

Wishing all Mother's Day filled with love, appreciation, and quality time with the ones who deserve it most.
