With so many graduations happening across the DC metro, families are celebrating a major milestone: their children stepping into adulthood. 🎓

But "legal adulthood" rarely makes the celebration checklist. 🧐

Your student may still live at home, be covered by your health insurance, and rely on you for support — but once they turn 18, the legal rules change.

That means parents may no longer have automatic access to medical information or the ability to step in during certain legal, financial, or healthcare situations. 🚑💵⚖️

One document families often overlook is a HIPAA Authorization.

Without one, parents may have difficulty:
☑️ Discussing test results with a doctor
☑️ Helping schedule or manage medical appointments
☑️ Speaking with providers during a mental health crisis
☑️ Getting information during an unexpected hospitalization

And this is not just about worst-case scenarios. Often, these documents matter in the everyday situations that come with helping a young adult navigate life.

Powers of attorney, advance medical directives, HIPAA Authorizations, Wills, and other planning documents can help make sure your student has support if they need it.

If you have a new 18-year-old or college-bound student in your life, this belongs on your summer to-do list.

Before your student leaves for college, learn about key legal documents, including Powers of Attorney, Medical Directives, Wills, and HIPAA authorizations.

We’re So Grateful! 🙌

Thanks to your reviews and referrals, 134 new clients retained The Geller Law Group in May for help with family law, wills and trusts, estate planning, probate, and small business matters — a 41% increase over May 2025! 🤯

So many of those new clients came to us because someone made a connection, shared an experience, or recommended our team. 🗣️

If you’re looking for simple ways to help a small business like ours, here are three that take just a minute and make a real impact:

⭐ Leave a Google review - positive reviews play a major role in how people choose a small business. If someone in your network has made a difference for you, a quick review goes a long way.

🤝 Make an introduction - know someone starting a business, going through a divorce, or needing help with essential estate planning documents? A referral can make all the difference, and they often lead to long-term relationships built on trust.

📲 Follow and engage - we work hard to share helpful information and stay connected with all of you. Following, liking, or commenting helps expand that reach. You can find us on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram.

To our clients, partners, and community, thank you for trusting us with some of life’s most important decisions. And to our exceptional team, thank you for the work you do every day to support the firm’s growth. 🥰

At The Geller Law Group, supporting our team means recognizing that people have full lives outside of work.

In this clip, Rahni Jenkins, GLG’s Chief HR and Operations Officer, shares why the firm chose a paid parental leave policy that supports both our team members and the organization.

As a women-led law firm, GLG is committed to creating a people-centered workplace where team members do not have to choose between career and family — and where working parents can feel supported as whole people.

That’s what “Life Works Here” means to us.

Proud moment! 🎉

The Geller Law Group advanced 13 spots on the Washington Business Journal’s 2026 Corporate Diversity Index – Small Companies, moving from No. 44 in 2025 to No. 31 in 2026.

This annual list recognizes Greater Washington businesses with fewer than 100 employees, ranked by the percentage of total employees who are people of color.

For GLG, this recognition reflects something we care deeply about: building a workplace where inclusion, belonging, flexibility, and representation are part of the culture every day.

At a time when many organizations are becoming more cautious about public DEI reporting, GLG proudly embraces the values that have shaped the firm since its founding.

We’re grateful to our leadership team for helping create a workplace where people feel seen, supported, and valued.

Our team had a great time at Loudoun Pride over the weekend, where The Geller Law Group was proud to once again serve as a sponsor.

This was our third consecutive year participating in the festival, and it was wonderful spending the day connecting with members of the LGBTQ+ community, local organizations, families, friends, and allies.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth to say hello—we loved meeting you! 🏳️‍🌈

We’re already looking forward to next year.

Last week, GLG partners got together for dinner at for an evening of great food, conversation, and connection.

Running a law firm requires collaboration, trust, and countless conversations that happen both inside and outside the office. Time spent together like this is an opportunity to strengthen relationships, share ideas, celebrate successes, and support one another through the challenges that come with leadership.

We are fortunate to be led by such thoughtful, accomplished, and dedicated women — colleagues who bring their talents, perspectives, and commitment to our clients and our team every day.
