Elaine Spector recently shared her thoughts on the mandatory return to office prevalent among many firms as we transition out of the pandemic state, and how the return can disproportionately affect certain demographics.
"Lawyers with families, in particular, could face challenges due to this shift. Many parents find remote work a lifeline, enabling them to be present for their families while delivering exceptional legal services. Eliminating or limiting remote work opportunities may unfairly bias these dedicated professionals. It doesn't need to be this way."

Yesterday was "National Coming Out Day." It is a day to acknowledge the very difficult reality that our friends in the LGBTQ+ community face - coming out about their sexuality. The first observation of this day was in 1988, and by 1990, it was being celebrated in all 50 states.
One statistic to keep in mind if you are on the receiving end of the message is that 50 percent of LGBTQ teens (ages 13–17) seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year. And 18 percent actually made a suicide attempt. That’s more than twice the rate of suicide attempts among all US teens, which is 9 percent. Your words matter. Use them wisely and with love, regardless of how you feel.

If you've ever tuned into an episode of #DrivingDiversity, you'll have noticed that Elaine Spector is passionate about diversity in law, and particularly, in patent law. Patent law requires a degree in engineering or a hard science, which makes patent law even less diverse than the legal profession as a whole, because it requires that hard science degree.
How can we change this? Here at Harrity & Harrity, LLP, we have a number of external diversity initiatives, such as the Harrity Academy, the Minority Firm Incubator, the Harrity for Parity Women’s Patent Workshop, as well as our Patent Pathways program.
However, there is another exciting new initiative that has come about. It is called “ADAPT”, which stands for “Advancing Diversity Across Patent Teams,” and it is set to launch at the LOT Network Bridge event in San Francisco today, September 28th! Have you heard about ADAPT and want to know more about the program? Watch this week's #DrivingDiversity to learn more.
If you are in the bay area, please consider registering for the event to learn more about ADAPT and what you can do to make a difference. Elaine will also be speaking with other law firms about best practices for diversity. You won’t want to miss it. Link provided here: https://lotbridge.com/

In last week's #DrivingDiversity, Elaine mentioned Law360's Pulse Report regarding the data with respect to diversity in law. As mentioned in last week's episode, women in equity partner positions are low when compared to the number of women in the profession overall. How about racial diversity? How does that factor in with the data found?
Unsurprisingly, the survey found that more attorneys of color are non-partners than partners, while white attorneys are almost evenly split. So what is all of this data telling us? Watch this week's #DrivingDiversity with Elaine Spector to find out more.

Law360 Pulse released a study last month titled “Glass Ceiling Report: Women in Law” which showed the modest growth in the number of female lawyers in private practice in the U.S.
What was even more discouraging was the the percentage of women equity partners remains far below parity, with just over 20% of women filling these roles. So what's going on here? And why are women not advancing into equity partner positions?

102 years ago, the United States Congress granted women full and equal voting rights. Today, we celebrate Women’s Equality Day in commemoration of this huge step towards gender equality, and in reminder of the progress left to be made.
To us, Women’s Equality Day means amplifying the fight for women all around the world to have the equal rights and the just treatment they deserve. It means that our daughters will be paid fairly based on their skills, not based on their gender. It means recognizing and embracing diversity, and giving everyone the chance to develop their full potential.
Harrity is proud to have a part in the fight for women’s equity and inclusion by offering programs, such as Patent Pathways and the Harrity for Parity Women's Patent Workshop, that will help women succeed in the patent field and by making sure that the women on our team get the exact same opportunities as the men. We are proud to stand for women’s equality everywhere.
What does women’s equality mean to you? And what are you doing to ensure that the women around you are being treated equally?

This Friday August 26th, we celebrate #WomensEqualityDay. It commemorates the 1920 adoption of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution, giving women in the US the right to vote.
It's important we celebrate how far we've come regarding women's rights, however, we must also not forget the obstacles women have had to overcome over the years to get to where they are now. Watch this week's #DrivingDiversity with Elaine Spector to find out just what freedoms our mothers lacked.

Harrity Analytics downloads and processes data on over 10 million #patent applications from the #USPTO every week. Our USPTO Board Decision dashboard gives you the ability to easily visualize board decisions since 2005. The data in the dashboard can be filtered by art unit and is sourced directly from the United States Patent and Trademark Office via the Patent Examination Data System (PEDS).

The Federal Circuit decided last week that #AI can’t be named as an inventor on a #patent application. Eli Mazour talked to Prof. Ryan Abbott on the last season of #Clause8 about why he pursued a litigation strategy on this issue instead of trying to get Congress to change the law. They also discussed what his strategy has already accomplished, despite whether or not the immediate litigation is successful.
Fittingly, coverage of last week’s decision has spurred widespread calls from the patent community for Congress to address the issue.

Eli Mazour, host of the Clause 8 Podcast, discusses his interview with Prof. Timothy T. Hsieh in light of last week’s order to randomly assign patent cases filed in Waco (Judge Albright’s court) to judges across the WDTX.
The order brings 2 questions to mind that Eli discussed with Judge Hsieh:
1) Is it good for a district court judge to have relevant experience to handle a patent case?
2) Is the analysis currently used to decide where patent cases should be handled based on geographic factors outdated?

Did you know that in just 2021 alone - 2,500 women left their jobs at big law firms? This information was found in a recent article titled "Why are Women Leaving Big Law, and What Can Law Firms Do About It?", published in JD Supra.
After analyzing the entire dataset for 2021, they could not determine where those 2,500 women who left the law had landed after they left their jobs. It was further determined by the data that they had not re-entered the more than 4,000 law firms, and 8,000 companies they track.
So what is this data telling us? And why are women choosing to leave the practice of law? Watch this week's #DrivingDiversity with Elaine Spector to hear the surprising reasons behind this new trend.

During August we celebrate many things: the long summer days, the days off we are able to take with our loved ones, and creating wonderful memories in the warm summer sun. But did you know that August is also #NationalCivilityMonth?
This holiday was founded to help the world remember to treat others the way we wish to be treated ourselves. But how can we apply these same principles in situations where we disagree with others? Watch this week's #DrivingDiversity to find out more.
