Have an 18-year-old college freshman? While estate planning is the last thing on your mind, you want to consider having important legal documents in place. Since most college students are at least 18 years old, they alone are responsible for making their health care decisions even if they are still on his/her parent’s medical insurance. As a parent, you may want to step in and assist in cases where your student child is unable to make choices for themselves like when they unconscious.
HIPAA Authorization allows an individual’s health information to be used by or disclosed to a third party.
Medical/ healthcare Power of Attorney allows an individual to designate another person to be their agent in the event they can no longer make healthcare decisions for themselves.
Durable Power of Attorney allows another person to make financial decisions or sign legal documents on an individual’s behalf if they become incapacitated or are otherwise unable to perform these activities on their own.
