While no one wants to "plan" a divorce, it is wise to prepare if you think that may be the way your marriage is going. The first few steps are very important.

✅ Establish your assets - know what you physically and financially have as a couple and also what individual assets you have
✅ Make copies of important records - financial documents, legal contracts, paperwork for children, etc. - even in amicable situations, you'll want to have duplicates of important records to share.
✅ Create a support network and consider how your personal life will change during and after the divorce process.

When both parties cannot mutually agree on all division of property, support, custody and visitation (if applicable), and the grounds of divorce, there are contested matters. Parties have 3 options when pursuing a contested divorce.

In Virginia, either party may be eligible for spousal support based on their financial position relative to the other party. The court can award support to the person who committed adultery if the economic impact of divorce has been determined to be detrimental to that party. There is no gender bias for spousal support in Virginia.

Last Saturday, Carrie and Ashley of Patterson Bookwalter PLLC participated in the 2023 K9 Krawl 5K with their pups Pepper and Sabrina!

This annual Fairfax event is hosted by the Friends of the K9 Krawl and sponsored by the Victims Services Unit of the Fairfax County Police Department to bring awareness to the link between animal abuse and domestic violence.

Animal abuse is one the main indicators of Domestic Violence or Interpersonal Violence happening within a home, and over 70% of domestic violence victims in the U.S. have reported that their abuser also targets their pets.

We are thrilled to be a part of this great event, hosted by Cooper Ginsberg Gray PLLC, and supporting such an amazing organization.

Shelter House is a community-based, non-profit organization serving families experiencing homelessness & domestic violence across Fairfax and Loudoun County. And they operate Fairfax County’s only 24-hour Domestic Violence Shelter. Thanks for doing such important work Shelter House. We are happy to “chip” (…clip) in!

Please meet Will Kaklis, who we are thrilled to introduce as the new Law Clerk at Patterson Bookwalter PLLC! Will earned his J.D. from Penn State Law and recently moved to Northern Virginia.

Here are a couple things we have asked Will to tell us about himself as he gets started.
- Will finds to be rewarding because it allows you the opportunity to counsel clients through very difficult times in their lives.
- Will is thrilled to be done with Law School so he no longer has to deal with professors cold calling students for answers (via the ) and is also thrilled to be done with the Bar exam so he no longer has to learn about secured transactions!
- Will is passionate about college football - Go !
- When he’s not watching sports to unwind, Will loves to go fishing, as you can see with this picture!
- And, fact , Will is an amateur dendrologist, which means he can identify trees based off their physical characteristics.
