You’ve chosen the godparents. Have you documented your choice of guardian?

Naming someone a godparent does not, by itself, give them legal authority to raise your child.

The same person can fill both roles, but your wishes need to be documented appropriately. In Illinois, you can nominate a guardian in your will, and the court makes the appointment based on your child’s best interests.

If you’ve been assuming “everyone knows who we’d want,” this is a good time to put that conversation on paper.

How do you ask someone to raise your child if you can’t?

It’s a big conversation. A simple opening can help:

“We’re working on our estate plan, and we keep coming back to you as someone we’d trust to care for our child. Would you be open to talking about that?”

Then give them room to think. Talk about your child’s needs, the values you hope to pass along, and what taking on that responsibility could mean for their household.

“You don’t have to answer today” might be the most helpful thing you say.

Family photos used to live in albums, shoeboxes, and frames around the house.

Now they may be scattered across phones, cloud accounts, shared folders, social media profiles, external drives, and devices sitting in a drawer.

Would your family know where the original files are stored?

Would they know which account pays for the storage?

Are the photos backed up?

Who should receive them?

Your photo library may not be the most financially valuable part of your estate, but it could be one of the most meaningful.

Your email may be the closest thing your digital life has to a master key.

Password resets lead there.

Bills, receipts, and subscription notices arrive there.

Account alerts, tax documents, travel confirmations, personal messages, and important records, too.

It may even be the only place someone could discover that certain accounts exist.

That is why your primary email account belongs in your digital estate plan.

Document the account. Decide who should be able to manage or close it. Identify anything that should be preserved. Keep access instructions somewhere secure.

One inbox can be a map to everything else.
