Picture a normal school day.

Your kids are waiting at pickup.

Then something happens, and you cannot get there.

Who gets the call?
Who has permission to step in?
Who would the school release them to?
Who has the legal authority to care for them if the situation becomes more serious?

Many parents have someone in mind.

A neighbor.
A sibling.
A close friend.
A grandparent.

But “they know what we would want” is not the same as having it clearly documented.

Estate planning for parents is not only about what happens someday.

It is about making sure the right people can step in during real-life moments when your children need care, stability, and familiar faces.

The goal is simple:

Choosing a guardian is one of the hardest parts of estate planning for parents.

It is also one of the most important.

Most people start with the obvious question: “Who loves our kids?”

That matters deeply.

But it is not the only question.

A thoughtful guardian conversation should also include:

👉 Do they share our values?
👉 Would their lifestyle work for our children?
👉 Where do they live?
👉 Would our kids need to change schools or communities?
👉 Are they emotionally and financially stable?
👉 Do they already have children?
👉 Would they be willing to take on this role?
👉 Would our children feel safe and supported with them?

This is not about finding a perfect person. It is about naming the person you trust most to raise your children with love, stability, and intention if you could not.

The guardian conversation is hard, but leaving the decision unanswered can be harder.

There is a moment many parents are not prepared for:

Your child turns 18, and legally, they are an adult.

That matters more than most families realize.

If your college student is injured, hospitalized, or facing a medical emergency, you may not automatically have access to the information you need or the authority to help make decisions.

That is where documents like a healthcare directive and HIPAA authorization become important.

They help clarify who can receive medical information and who can step in if your student cannot speak for themselves.

It is not about expecting something to go wrong.

It is about making sure the right people can help if something does.

Before move-in day, families are often focused on dorm supplies, meal plans, and class schedules.
