We want to share some information about motorcycle endorsements.

Riding a motorcycle without a motorcycle endorsement in Oregon is illegal and can lead to citations and fines.

The purpose behind these laws is to help make sure that motorcycle operators are able to handle their vehicle safely, which requires a different set of skills than driving an automobile.

If you are stopped by law enforcement, you can receive a citation and may not be allowed to continue riding if you do not have a motorcycle endorsement.

In some situations, your motorcycle may be towed, which can lead to additional towing and storage costs in addition to the initial fine.

Insurance companies and their lawyers may try to argue that a motorcyclist is at fault if they are riding without an endorsement. In those situations, the motorcyclist needs an attorney who understands that is not a legitimate argument. The basic question in any crash is who or what caused it, and who was at fault. Riding with or without an endorsement does not cause a crash.

After a serious motor vehicle crash, life can feel especially challenging.

From medical treatment and medical bills piling up, to complicated insurance issues and legal challenges, to just the pain and limitations of an injury: so much can make an already hard time even harder.

Another painful reminder: Don't Drink and Drive.

What was a beautiful Oregon summer day turned into a life-changing crash when a drunk driver lost control on Highway 101, crossed the centerline, and struck another car head-on.

Ellen was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where she remained for days with multiple fractures of the ribs, lower leg, hand, and fingers, and an abdominal wall laceration and other cuts and bruises.

Even when a drunk driver is held criminally responsible, there are unfortunately limits on what the civil justice system can do for an injured survivor.

We collected everything that was available to Ellen, but from our perspective, it wasn’t enough.

One of the hardest parts of working on these cases is knowing that drunk driving crashes are entirely preventable. Yet thousands of people are killed and hundreds of thousands more are injured by impaired drivers every year.

As citizens, we have rights and responsibilities.

Our citizen responsibilities are relatively few, but critical. These include serving on juries, serving in the military when required, and voting.

This fall, we all have the opportunity to shape our communities, our state, and our nation. Elections will be held on November 3.

To vote in Oregon, you must be an Oregon resident, a US citizen, and must be registered to vote by October 13, 2026.

If you are not yet registered to vote, you can register online or at the County Elections office.

It's back to school season!

As the school year gets underway, our roads continue to become busier with school buses, bicycles, pedestrians, and families traveling to and from school - especially during peak drop-off and pick-up times.
..And the school day doesn’t always end when the last class gets out.

After-school sports, activities, practices, and events mean more children and families are on the roads into the evening hours.

As daylight continues to fade earlier each day, take an extra moment to be mindful and slow down, stay alert, and watch carefully for pedestrians, cyclists, and school buses.

Let’s make getting home safely part of every school day.

Even when there's a clearly marked crosswalk and it's broad daylight, a pedestrian can be run over.

Jennifer was walking in a crosswalk after a car stopped to allow her to cross. A driver in the next lane continued past the stopped car and into the crosswalk, violently striking Jennifer and knocking her unconscious.

Jennifer suffered serious injuries, including a brain injury and fractured sternum.

Afterwards, she experienced daily neck pain, dizziness, balance problems, fatigue, anxiety and depression, and had difficulty running, jumping, socializing, and participating in everyday life.

Her case is a powerful reminder that a brain injury doesn't end when someone regains consciousness. Recovery can be long, uncertain, and life-changing.

It is also a reminder of how vulnerable pedestrians are.

Jennifer followed the rules. She was walking in a crosswalk in full daylight in an area with clear pedestrian crossing signs . . . and she was still seriously injured.
