Why Are Intersections a Common Crash Location?

Intersections are a major source of car crash injuries in Lane County.

Intersections involve conflicting vehicle paths and sometimes split-second decisions, which increase the likelihood of collisions.

Crash data show that more than 1 out of 4 Lane County collisions occur at or near intersections.

The severity of crash injuries at intersections in part reflects driver behavior.

In fatal and serious injury intersection crashes:
➡️42% involved failure to yield
➡️12% involved inattention
➡️9% involved running a stop sign
➡️9% involved improper turning

These often lead to collisions where occupants are struck from the side and typically have less protection. When intersections are located on higher-speed or rural roads, there may be greater impact forces, which means that crashes at these locations are more likely to result in serious or fatal injuries.

Stay safe on the water this summer!

We recently made another life jacket donation to McKenzie Fire & Rescue to help promote water safety in our community.

As summer approaches and more people head to Oregon's rivers and lakes, it’s important to remember that life jackets save lives.

It doesn't matter if you’re boating, floating, rafting, or paddling, wearing a life jacket could make all the difference.

Enjoy the water safely this summer - and remember: if you don't have a life jacket, borrow one!

We're proud to support the future of law.

We recently made a donation to the Bill Warnisher Scholarship for Leadership and Justice at the University of Oregon School of Law.

This endowed scholarship was created in memory of Bill Warnisher to support future law students who demonstrate leadership, mentorship, and a commitment to public interest work.

Don shares that, “I knew Bill Warnisher; he was a beloved member of the local bar, and was committed to a fair justice system that was tempered by mercy where appropriate.”

Investing in future legal leaders helps strengthen the rule of law that helps all of us.

Why Are Motorcyclists More Likely to Suffer Severe Injuries?

Motorcycle crashes make up only 4% of all crashes in Lane County, but account for 12% of local fatal and serious injury crashes.

These numbers reflect the lack of physical protection for motorcyclists compared to people in passenger vehicles.

While helmets are legally required and can reduce the severity of head injuries, helmets do not prevent head injuries in a significant number of crashes in which helmets were used properly.

If you or a loved one has been seriously injured in a motorcycle crash, reach out to learn how we may be able to help.

It's Memorial Day! 🇺🇸

Today, let's all pause to reflect on what this holiday is truly about. It's not all BBQ's and time off work.

It's a time to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country to preserve freedom and democracy.

We are grateful and we remember - today and always.

Who Is Most at Risk for Severe Car Crash Injuries?

The people most at risk of severe car crash injuries in Lane County are older drivers, motorcyclists, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

Crashes involving these road users are more likely to result in fatal or serious injuries than crashes involving the general driving population. Lane County crash data shows these groups represent a disproportionately high share of fatal and serious injury crashes compared to their share of all crashes, indicating higher vulnerability when a crash occurs.

Older persons are vulnerable to more severe injury in any traumatic event. Motorcyclists, pedestrians, and bicyclists are all directly exposed to crash forces, with limited or no crash protection.

How Does Speed Increase the Risk of Serious Injury in a Car Crash?

Speed increases the risk of serious injury because:
➡️it increases crash forces
➡️reduces the available time needed to react or respond
➡️limits a driver’s ability to correct mistakes

Lane County crash data show that speed-related crashes account for 20% of all crashes but 28% of fatal and serious injury crashes, indicating that crashes involving speed are (not surprisingly) more likely to result in more severe harm.

May is National Bicycle Safety Month!

There's nothing like riding a bike on a beautiful day
. . but safety should still be top of mind!

There's unfortunately too much misinformation out there about bicycle laws, safety practices, and what to do if you've been involved in a bicycle crash.

Awareness, education, and accountability are key to making our streets safer for everyone.

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month!

This time of year, we start to see more motorcycles on the road.

The weather is warming up, the sun is shining more, and everyone wants to go for a ride - including motorcyclists!

But they face unique risks on the road..and often, unfair assumptions after a crash.

The reality is that motorcyclists are significantly more vulnerable, with far higher rates of serious injury and fatality compared to those in passenger vehicles.

While safety measures like helmets are important, they can only do so much.

True safety requires awareness, accountability, and respect from every driver on the road.

We can all help reduce the number of collisions. Give motorcyclists extra room. Remember they may need to change lanes. Watch out for your blind spots when changing lanes yourself, and when turning.

If you or a loved one has been seriously injured in a motorcycle crash that was someone else’s fault, we’re here to help you pursue the justice you deserve. Visit our website to learn more: https://ecs.page.link/Q5iUF
