Ask Blue Scale HR: Workplace Retaliation – Know the Signs, Protect Your Peace
Retaliation in the workplace isn’t always loud. Sometimes it whispers through shifts in tone, sudden schedule changes, or being excluded from meetings you once led. But make no mistake: retaliation is illegal, and you have rights.
Here’s the tea 🍵:
✅ What is Retaliation?
Retaliation happens when an employer punishes an employee for engaging in legally protected activity, like reporting discrimination, harassment, unsafe working conditions, wage violations, or participating in an investigation.
🚩 Common Signs of Retaliation:
• You’re reassigned to less favorable duties after reporting a concern
• Your hours are reduced without explanation
• You suddenly receive negative performance reviews despite consistent work
• You’re being isolated or excluded from projects, meetings, or communication
• You’re terminated without warning or fair cause
🛑 What To Do If You Suspect Retaliation:
1. Document Everything. Save emails, texts, write down conversations and dates
2. Report Internally First. Follow your company’s grievance policy if possible
3. Stay Professional. Don’t let retaliation drag you into behavior that could be used against you
4. File a Complaint. You can file with the EEOC or your state’s civil rights agency
5. Reach Out to HR Support. Whether in-house or external (like Blue Scale 💙), don’t navigate it alone
🎯 Blue Scale Reminder:
You don’t have to choose between your check and your dignity 💙
