My friend Jay Weaver of Big Daddy Weave passed away yesterday.

Jay, along with his brother Mike and their band, were always so good to me, but never were they more kind to me than when they took me on tour with them in the weeks after my divorce was finalized.

I was dejected, depressed, and certain that my status as a divorcee would make me a pariah to both my industry and Christian music listeners. My whole future was uncertain, and all I had energy for was sleeping, though I wasn’t even doing that very well. But I still had bills to pay, so what was I to do?

Big Daddy Weave invited me to tour with them for the better part of that year, a tour that felt more like a hospital than anything else as God and my friends put me back together, piece by piece. That work is ongoing.

A precious memory I’ll never forget was when we were all praying in the sanctuary before a show in Alabama. I was sitting in a pew, my head hung low, quietly praying through my tears when Jay walked over to me, put his hands on the sides of my head, and lifted my face to look me in the eye.

I didn’t want to look him in the eye. It was too much for me. I felt like unworthy—I had lost so much and disappointed so many people, including myself, that I was full of too much pain and shame to be able to bear looking someone directly in the eye. I wished I could escape the moment as I tried to look anywhere else, but Jay held my face steady in his hands until I surrendered to the moment and met his gaze. Then he looked deep into my eyes, past them to my soul, and said, “I love you,” and prayed for my restoration.

It changed me.

I always wondered what the words of Psalm 3:3 meant: “you’re the glory and the lifter of my head.” But now I knew. Jay showed me. Jay, and God through him, was the lifter of my head that day, lifting my eyes from the depths of my sorrow and shame to look into the eyes of grace and know I was loved.

I honestly don’t know how the afterlife works, but I’d like to believe there’s a moment as Jay steps into eternity with brand new feet after a long, hard journey when God takes his face in his hands, lifts it to look into his eyes, and says, “I love you,” as he’s welcomed home.

I find the history behind the Gilmer Courthouse to be interesting. The first picture is an old picture of the Hyatt Hotel. The second picture is of the Old Courthouse on the now square built in 1854. Both were on the square at the same time. The last picture is of the William Milton Teem Family, one of the partners of the Hyatt Hotel. This picture was taken around 1908 on the porch where my office is located. In 1934 the Old Courthouse was torn down and the Hyatt Hotel was purchased to serve as the New Courthouse. A picture of the same is included. At one point late 1950’s/early 1960’s the New Courthouse was painted white. The Courthouse today was intended to be a replica of the same. Please share if you have further history. I know at one point the Gilmer Courthouse was one of the only courthouses that had previously served as a hotel in the State of Georgia. Anybody with photos or personal history feel free to share Jeb Chatham

Please read..long post but hopefully will be of help to someone

As Thanksgiving is quickly approaching, I am reminded of the many loyal clients that our office has been able to help over the years. Recently, I received a message from a client who I had represented in a custody action whereby custody was awarded to my client in 1999. The client wrote me to inform me that the children were now adults and doing very well. I am truly thankful and blessed to be able to serve with the knowledge and counsel for those who are in need. With this being said, I felt pressed to share an area that has been concerning me as of lately.

WILLS and “Health Care POA” now known as the Georgia Advance Directive for Health Care.

Several years ago in July of 2007, the law was revised in the Probate area to make changes to what many today still refer to as Durable Health Care Power of Attorney. Regardless of what term is used, this has and is becoming increasingly more important issue. Without getting into specifics of another case, recently we were able to help a family who did not have the Advance Health Care Directive completed. This particular case had a positive result, but was timely and costly to the family, not to mention the risk of the outcome not being what they had wished for. This particular case has made me realize the importance of advising persons of all ages to make sure they have a Will and an Advance Health Care Directive prepared. As times are changing in the health care industry, we are unsure how all the changes will affect us as consumers and patients. But having the proper documentation can give you and your family members the peace of mind they are still in control of what medical care is to be received. Both of these documents are relatively inexpensive, especially in comparison to the cost that may be incurred when the time comes for each of us to need them and they are not prepared. We urge each of our readers to please check into these documents for yourself as well as your family members that may not read this post. We hope you will consider our office for this service, however if not, the objective of this post is to remind and bring to the attention the necessity of the documents. So please contact us for a consultation at no charge to discuss your options. Also, please share this post will friends and family if you so desire. Thank you Jeb Chatham
