Some of the best of North Georgia doesn't cost a thing. The Cohutta Wilderness spans 37,000 acres with 90 miles of trails, including routes along the Jacks and Conasauga Rivers. No fees, no permits, just room to roam.

One tip before you go: Three Forks, Betty Gap, Chestnut Lead and Tearbritches trailhead lots close from January through early March each year. Get out there this fall while they're all open.

Heading to the Georgia Apple Festival for the first time this weekend? Welcome! Here are a few tips from your neighbors to make the day a sweet one.

Arrive early. The gates open at 9, and the crowds pick up quickly by late morning.

Park and ride. Parking at the fairgrounds is limited, so park at one of the local schools and take the shuttle right to the gate.

Leave pets at home. They aren't allowed at the fairgrounds, but the Apple Arts Festival downtown is pet-friendly if your pup wants to join the fun.

Pack for mountain weather. Bring sunscreen and an umbrella, since October can give us both in one afternoon. Wear comfortable shoes, too.

Bring a little cash. Some vendors may not take cards, and it keeps the lines moving.

And bring your patience. Traffic will be busy and the lines will be long, but the fried pies are worth the wait.

Admission is $10, and kids under 12 get in free. See you at the fairgrounds!
