🚨 NEW FORM I‑864: USCIS MAY ACCESS A SPONSOR’S CREDIT REPORT
USCIS has issued a new edition of Form I‑864, Affidavit of Support, with an important change for petitioners and joint sponsors.
Beginning August 31, 2026:
• Only the 08/24/26 edition will be accepted.
• There is no grace period.
• USCIS will reject or refuse to process the former 10/17/24 edition if it is postmarked or submitted on or after August 31.
The new form also contains a privacy release authorizing USCIS and the Department of State to request information from consumer reporting agencies.
What does this mean?
It does not automatically mean that a sponsor must have a particular credit score. USCIS has not announced a minimum score.
However, a sponsor’s consumer or credit report may now become part of the agency’s assessment of whether the Affidavit of Support is sufficient.
If the sponsor has a credit or security freeze, USCIS warns that it may be unable to obtain the necessary information. The sponsor should respond promptly if asked to release the freeze to avoid delays.
Before filing:
• Confirm that every page shows the 08/24/26 edition date.
• Review the petitioner’s, joint sponsor’s, and household member’s financial documentation.
• Check for credit freezes or fraud alerts.
• Continue providing complete income, tax, employment, asset, and household-size evidence.
A credit report does not replace the income requirements or the legally binding obligations created by Form I‑864.
