Don’t forget to turn those clocks ahead before heading off to bed tonight! Well, the ones that still need to be manually changed, like the clock in the cupola of the Pasquotank County Courthouse in Elizabeth City.

✨Historic Chowan County Courthouse✨

As the oldest courthouse still in active use in North Carolina, the Chowan County Courthouse is also the state’s oldest surviving county courthouse. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970, and the North Carolina Supreme Court last heard arguments there in October 2022. A little history here in the First Judicial District of NC 💫💫

North Carolina’s first known judicial proceedings were held on this date, February 6, 1665, near the banks of the Little River and Halls Creek, in what became Pasquotank County. This was a gathering of the first North Carolina General Assembly (then the Assembly of Albemarle County). As there were no designated courthouse buildings at that time, members likely met in a private home.
