One week ago, we had the honor of attending the Jane Barbosa Legacy Brunch at Elgin Community College, created to keep Jane’s legacy of advocacy, education, and community alive.

Hearing from Hispanic students and community leaders about their experiences navigating college, advocating for themselves, and overcoming barriers was incredibly meaningful. We were also inspired by the words shared by Senator Cristina Castro and others.

The scholarship was created to help students who may not always know where to turn as they pursue higher education. Supporting students and creating opportunities is one of the most meaningful ways to continue Jane’s legacy.

A heartfelt thank you to the organizers, speakers, volunteers, and every donor who contributed to the gift baskets, raffle and auction items. Your generosity is helping support a truly important cause. ❤️

We are grateful to have been part of this special morning.

Proud of my hometown!
Had an opportunity to meet with Lourdes Duarte earlier this week and share with her why I love my city and a little about what I do to give back to this amazing community

Agradecida that my grandparents came to Elgin in the 1950s and made it our home

Congrats to these investors! Turning goals into assets and investing in themselves along the way.

My very first legal assistant and I have remained friends for almost 25 years! As any attorney will tell you, the legal assistants are your rock. Your first legal assistant encourages you as you enter your new profession and offer the most important and practical guidance - Mely was my confidant and rock as I began my legal career.

I’m forever grateful for my tocaya and am extremely proud of her for earning a Bachelor of Science in Applied Human Resources Management 💪🏽👩🏻‍🎓

¡Felicidades, Mely!

Forever proud of you, tocaya!

As I reflect on someone who recently met with me because she went to a non-attorney who submitted her immigration petition when one should NOT have been submitted – I have to say a few things:

When it comes to legal matters – always consult with an experienced, licensed attorney.
The person I met with is now in removal proceedings (deportation) and this never should have happened! Her family is devastated.

⚠️Reminder⚠️: Just because someone *allows* or *asks* you to call them “abogada” or “licenciada” (don’t get me started because I have thoughts on that too) does NOT mean they are.
Ask them to confirm they are a licensed attorney.
Ask them for their ARDC number. Look them up at www.iardc.org It’s 100% ok to ask these questions – these are important and relevant facts to confirm

I am pictured here with my prima, Emi Morales, another LICENSED attorney. In other words, we passed the IL State Bar Exam and are licensed by the IL Supreme Court.

I posted something similar a few years ago, but since I was just reminded of what happens when a non-attorney presenting herself as an attorney can devastate a family’s life and stability (and possibly their ability to remain in the U.S.), I want (NEED) to say it again: did you know that Lawtinas account for only 2% of U.S. lawyers?

💪🏽4 years undergraduate degree
💪🏽LSAT
💪🏽3 full-time years of law school
💪🏽Juris Doctor
💪🏽Pass State Bar Exam

It was not easy, but it wasn’t supposed to be. Being an abogada is *earned* …

📣Let’s hear it for the 2%👏🏼

I meet with young Latinas who are considering law school so that I may share my experience and advice. If you are considering law school and want to meet over coffee or chat on a call, DM me. I am happy to help! As lawtinas, we can and should open doors not only for ourselves and our families, but also for our community! We should be helping our community.

This morning my client visited us after returning from CDJ for his interview. The moment I looked at him I saw a different person: permanent resident status is life-changing.

Yesenia and I were emotional as he showed us his videos of visiting his parents in the most beautiful San Luis Potosí! It had been almost 20 years since he last saw them. His family couldn’t feed him enough : enchiladas potosinas, nopales, zacahuil, cecina.
Extra special for me because Severo was born in Cerritos, SLP - my beautiful mom’s birthplace.

Yesenia and I both said this morning - this is why we LOVE what we do.
