As the juvenile public defender for Oklahoma City Municipal Court, I see this all the time. Today in intake I had a young client who was cited for being out past curfew in Bricktown, even though his 19-year-old cousin was with him.

If your teen is going to be out in Bricktown at night, make sure a parent or responsible adult is with them. That way, when law enforcement shows up, there’s no question about who they’re with.

📄 Served with a protective order in Oklahoma? Now what?
1️⃣ Check whether the emergency order was granted. If it wasn’t, you’ve likely just been set for a hearing and no order is in effect yet. If it was, the paperwork lists what you’re prohibited from doing. Read it carefully and follow it to the letter.
2️⃣ Do not contact the person who filed. That includes texts, calls, social media, and messages through friends or family. Even if they reach out to you, don’t respond.
3️⃣ Hire an attorney. A protective order can affect custody, your home, your job, and your right to own fi****ms.
4️⃣ Show up to your hearing. If you miss it, the order will most likely be granted against you.

When dealing with custody/divorce cases I always tell my clients to save and document all communication. There have been many times when a client has deleted texts, pictures, or voicemails that would have been very helpful to their case. Without documented information, it makes it difficult to prove what did or did not occur.
