Why should newlyweds care about estate planning? Because everyone – young or old, married or single – needs to protect themselves and those they love.
Unfortunately, many couples spend more time planning their honeymoon than they do planning the best way to protect each other.
We get asked these questions quite often:
"We just got married and don’t have any children. Why would we need an estate plan?"
Just because you marry someone does not automatically mean that they will inherit from you. Some assets, such as life insurance policies, have beneficiary designations that must be changed.
"We may be moving soon. It’s okay to wait until we’re settled before having our estate planning done, right?"
A move should not be a reason to put off your estate planning. While we understand that there are a lot of changes occurring, tragedy can occur at any time. Even if you are changing states, there are still some aspects, such as updating your beneficiary designations, that can be accomplished and will not be affected by the move.

A: When handling multiple investment properties, we encourage our clients to create a Series LLC if it is permitted in the state where the investment property resides. This has the same effect of isolating each property without the extra fees to the state every year that you would have to pay if you separated properties into their own LLCs.

Limited Liability Companies should be created any time you have an investment property to protect your personal assets in the case of a lawsuit involving your property. You can create an LLC anytime, even if you have already purchased the property in your name. If you still need to purchase the property, you can make the LLC ahead of time and buy the investment property in the name of your LLC.
