I came across this article about the interim studies beginning at the Oklahoma State Capitol, and one topic immediately caught my attention: alternatives to long-term school suspension.
This one is personal for me.

I struggled with this with one of my own children. There were repeated suspensions, and eventually he was indefinitely removed from the traditional classroom and placed into online education.

For him, it was devastating. He lost the routine of going to school, being around other students and teachers, and feeling like he was still part of something. Watching what that did to him was heartbreaking as a mom.

At one point, overwhelmed and trying to figure out what options we had left, I asked about him getting his GED. Instead of someone sitting down with us and first exploring whether there was a path to get him back into a brick-and-mortar school, I was sent a form that would allow him to withdraw.

That has stayed with me.

I absolutely believe our teachers deserve classrooms where they can teach and students can learn safely. I also understand that schools have incredibly difficult situations to deal with.

But I believe we have to ask another question too:
What happens to the child after we remove them?

Sometimes the child causing the problems may also be the child who desperately needs someone to figure out why they're struggling and what can be done differently.

Discipline may be necessary. But I don't believe removing a struggling child from school should automatically become the solution without also looking for a way to keep that child connected to their education.

That's why I'm glad Oklahoma lawmakers are studying alternatives to long-term suspension. I hope parents, teachers, administrators and especially students who have lived through it are part of that conversation.

I'm curious whether other Oklahoma parents or educators have experienced this. How do we support our teachers and protect the classroom while also making sure struggling kids don't simply get pushed out of school?

As summer ends, lawmakers officially begin analyzing issues of concern and planning policy proposals for 2027. These “interim studies” allow legislative committees to conduct hearings on proposed issues at the State Capitol between sessions.

🏡 Something for buyers to think about…

Home prices reached another July record even while home sales have slowed.

A lot of buyers are waiting for interest rates to come down — but what happens if rates make a meaningful drop and many of those buyers jump back into the market at the same time?

More buyers can mean more competition, fewer negotiating opportunities and potentially more upward pressure on home prices.
Right now, some buyers have something they may not have later: less competition and more negotiating power.

You don't necessarily have to wait for the “perfect” interest rate to make a smart move. The better question is whether buying makes sense for you right now.

And that's something we can sit down and figure out together. 🏡
