The Constitution promises every person due process and the presumption of innocence — principles that only have meaning when they are defended.

This week, the murder charge against Joseph Castillo in the 2023 Edinburg case was dismissed after the evidence was carefully reviewed through the legal process.

I appreciate the professionalism of the Hidalgo County District Attorney’s Office and their willingness to carefully evaluate the evidence in this case.

Due process matters, and today the system worked the way it was designed to work.

Norma Borrego and I were blessed with the opportunity to represent a young man who was accused of committing 5 counts of some form of sexual assault against 2 women (an adult and a minor). He faced life in prison.

I met him over 4 years ago when I was first court appointed to represent him. He was 17 years old at the time. From the beginning, he told me he was innocent. He never changed his story nor his position. He never flinched, always looking me straight in the eyes whenever I challenged him. I’m thankful to have met him and humbled that he trusted us in defending him.

We had the perfect jury. They listened to the evidence, followed the law and found our client NOT GUILTY on all 5 counts.

We thank them from the bottom of our hearts. God bless you for doing the right thing.
