You should review your loved one's prior deeds and estate planning documents to determine who the owner of their real property is. Maybe they have a living trust and the real property is funded into that trust. Or maybe your loved one signed a Ladybird Deed and there is one or more named beneficiary of the real property.

You should record your loved one's death certificate with the county Register of Deeds and notify the city or township of their passing.

You should also review their mortgage statements to see if their homeowner's insurance and property taxes were being escrowed and paid automatically.

Finally, you should notify their homeowner's insurance carrier that they have passed away.
