From Liz: A few months ago, I got an email notifying me that I was being named in the inaugural Michigan Lawyers Weekly Legal 250 list. The email said that this honor was intended to recognize the 250 most influential attorneys in Michigan. Everyone on the list had been nominated and then vetted and selected.
I was shocked. I did not see how I could possibly be one of the 250 most influential lawyers in Michigan. Not for lack of effort, that’s for sure, but I have only been practicing in the areas I am known for in Michigan since 2018. And while I have been practicing law for almost 20 years, I have only been lawyering in Michigan since 2014. It did not make sense to me how in literally only eight years of doing what I am known for doing in Michigan I could be recognized in this way.
This honor means a lot to me. You don’t buy your way into this one. Somebody thought highly enough of me to nominate me and whoever looked at their nomination thought I was worth putting on this very selective list. Some of the other folks on this list are some of the most excellent lawyers I know (although I have to say I do see a few glaring omissions also lol).
When they sent me the questionnaire for this, I struggled bc I don’t have any of the normal lawyer answers for this. I can’t say that I was inspired by lawyers in my family or that I have won any great verdicts or that I knew I wanted to be a lawyer since I was a kid or any of that crap. I stumbled into what I am doing now through a comedy of errors that just happened to work out perfectly for me. So I decided to just be honest and let them publish what they would and I am really excited to see that they let me be myself.
I want you to know that this profession is for anybody. You don’t have to have any lawyers in your family. You don’t have to get that good of grades. Hell, if your law school had rankings- and thank god they didn’t- could have been in the bottom 10% of your class, your first year. You could have been on the brink of dropping out of law school. You could have been fired from two jobs. You can be a great lawyer, despite-and in fact because of-all of your own life experiences.
