Liz just left court where an irate opposing party confronted her in the hallway and began hurling insults at her including that she is “unethical” and “a manipulator” because she reported to the court that he was not responding to attorneys’ emails. The kicker is that he could have settled and been out of this case six months ago if he had just… wait for it… responded to Liz’s email.

Congratulations DeCarlo Brown, JD!!! Our law clerk DeCarlo graduated from today and we couldn’t be more proud. Our other law clerk, Loren Safta, graduates on Monday from , and was in East Lansing to celebrate her partner Alex’s graduation. Both DeCarlo and Loren have been huge assets to our firm, and we cannot wait to see what they accomplish as lawyers. The class of 2026 is going to do great things!

Liz has a blast at her 20 year law school reunion this past weekend. Little known fact- she struggled a LOT academically and socially her first year, as a square midwestern public school peg trying to fit into a round east coast private school hole. It was so hard she was actually planning to drop out after her first year. Fortunately (or unfortunately, if you happen to be her opposing counsel), she decided to go back for her second year and give it another shot. The rest is history!

Our Michigan team had a fabulous time presenting at and attending the Journal of Law and Society’s Symposium at the end of March! Loren, one of our law clerks, organized the symposium, and Mark and Liz spoke on panels addressing K-12 and higher education. It was an inspiring day of learning and connecting with colleagues from all over the country, and we enjoyed a team dinner with some of our Michigan team that night.

Rep. Hope invited Liz to the ceremonial signing of Michigan’s anti-SLAPP bill last week. This is a really important bill that protects people from malicious, retaliatory litigation when they engage in reporting abuse and government whistleblowing. Liz worked on the committee to help get it passed for several years and was so proud to see it get signed into law.

Our law clerk Loren attended the Empowering Women in Law Gala at on Sunday. She had a wonderful time connecting with young women in law. Thank you for the invitation!

Liz really enjoyed facilitating Advanced Title IX Decision Maker training for the excellent, highly committed team at Hope College today. The group had a ton of good questions and discussion and the College has a clear, strong commitment to getting this important work done right. Please reach out to us if your team could benefit from similar training! We love helping school teams serve their communities well (and avoid lawsuits from firms like ours!)
