Ingham County Bar Association social deliberations last night reminded me why I show up to these things. The bar can feel siloed sometimes—your clients, your cases, your area of practice, your lane. But events like this break that down. You remember everyone’s doing the same work, just from different angles. I wouldn’t normally run into some of these practitioners, and get to know them personally, without ICBA. Community over competition.

Last night at Wharton Center for Performing Arts with the crew at the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce event 💚

So here’s the thing about the Lansing business community—yeah, everyone shows up to support each other’s work and lift the community (which is genuinely awesome). But the real magic? It’s the friendships. The people you came to “network” with become the people you actually want to see. The ones who make you laugh, get what you’re building, and remind you why you love this place.

Grateful for these fabulous humans—not just for what they do in their industries or for Lansing, but for who they are. That’s the stuff that actually matters.

Attended the Ingham County Bar Association Annual Meeting & Shrimp Dinner on May 20, and I have two takeaways: (1) the legal community in mid-Michigan is genuinely full of good humans, and (2) peel-and-eat shrimp as the dinner choice is an underrated power move. 🍤

Ran into Judge Filice at the Ingham County Bar Association event last month and my heart grew three sizes. 🖤

Shortly after I moved to Michigan in 2011, I had his court-appointed misdemeanor contract and tried somewhere between 15 and 20 jury trials in front of him. He taught me so much during what I can only describe as my Michigan legal formative era.
Did I tick him off enough that he took voir dire away from the attorneys entirely? I did. Am I proud of it? I’m choosing yes.
I learned so much from him about so many things. And although he is retired, it is always a joy to see him.
Some people just stay with you. 🙏

Three months post-surgery. A spring of “I’ll get back to it soon.” A text last night asking if I could sub for a soccer game.

I said yes, and I remembered something I keep forgetting: taking care of yourself isn’t separate from doing good work — it’s how you keep doing good work.

Spent Wednesday at the 26th Annual Michigan Association of Treatment Court Professionals Conference at the Lansing Center, and I’ll say what I always say: treatment courts work. They save lives, restore families, and give people a real shot at the future they almost lost.

As a defense attorney, I get a front-row seat to what addiction and mental health crises do to my clients — and to what’s possible when the system meets them with structure, accountability, and grace instead of just punishment. That’s not soft. That’s smart. And it changes lives.

Grateful to spend the day with the judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, coordinators, peer recovery coaches, and treatment professionals who make this work happen across Michigan. The room was full. That tells you everything.

I love the fact that “going to a bar on a Tuesday” counts as work when you’re a Chamber member. 🍷 Last night’s Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce event at One North Restaurant was the good kind of Cinco de Mayo chaos — tons of TVs, someone walking around handing out tacos, and so many people in mid-Michigan I’ve been meaning to call. If I hugged you, made you laugh, or promised to email you something: I meant it. (The email part is aspirational 🙄)
