What Does It Mean To Get a Document Notarized?

To be official and legal, many if not most formal documents require certification by a Notary Public. A Notary's role is to verify the identity of every person signing a document through some form of government-issued identification. Once your identification has been verified, the Notary Public must watch you as you actually sign the document (you can't sign it before meeting with the Notary). The Notary then applies their official seal or stamp to the document, certifying it as authentic.

Some documents require additional witnesses to watch as you sign them as well. Acceptable forms of ID include your driver's license, military ID, state ID, or permanent resident card ("green card"). Expired forms of identification are not acceptable to notaries. If you have questions as to whether or not your particular form of ID is acceptable, contact your notary prior to setting up your appointment and ask first.

In general, you may not use forms of identification such as social security cards, wedding licenses, birth certificates, credit cards, or school IDs.
