Town of East Hartford, CT – Government Official page for the Town of East Hartford. Mayor Connor S. Martin. The east side of the Connecticut River was at that time part of Hartford.

The part of the land Known as East Hartford was once inhabited by the Podunk Indians, in 1635 the town saw its first permanent colonists when Thomas Hooker and his followers came from Cambridge, Massachusetts to found Hartford. Initially settled about 1640, early settlers included William Goodwin, Thomas Burnham and William Pitkin. The first petition by residents to establish a separate Town aprt

from Hartford was rejected by the General Assembly in 1726. The Charter empowers the Mayor to govern the Town in cooperation with an elected nine-member Town Council and Town Treasurer. The Chairman of the Town Council is also the Deputy Mayor, and his powers include the power to approve and adopt the Annual Budget, the power to enact ordinances, the power to fix penalties and fines, and the powers of subpoena and investigation. When we talk about the need for a new Firehouse #2, this video highlights some of the reasons.

EHFD Station 2 was built in 1940 and serves the northernmost area of East Hartford. In 2018, the East Hartford Town Council purchased a vacant dwelling at 1710 Main Street with the intention of locating the future Fire Station 2 there.

The Town proposes to construct a modern, energy-efficient facility that has gender-neutral facilities as well as individual bunkrooms for privacy. The station will also have state-of-the-art cancer mitigation systems to prevent firefighter exposure from diesel exhaust and cross-contamination of firefighting equipment after a fire.

The Town of East Hartford continues to make steady progress on the design of the new Fire Station 2. The project formally began on July 1, 2025, when the architectural firm Tecton Architects was selected and contracted to lead the design effort.

The design phase is fully funded at $736,400 from three sources: American Rescue Plan Act ($280,862), Bond funding (2024) $357,538 and National Development Impact Fund ($98,000).

You can learn more about the project here www.easthartfordct.gov/fire-department/pages/fire-house-2-project

Much appreciation to Congressman John Larson for the ARPA funding allocated towards the project so far.
