Attorney Ken Barber loves two things: a good history lesson and a good deal.

And on October 18, 1867, the United States officially took possession of Alaska after purchasing the territory from Russia for $7.2 MILLION. 😲

That worked out to roughly two cents an acre for more than 375 million acres.
WHAT. A. DEAL. 😂

At the time, not everyone thought it was such a brilliant purchase. Critics famously referred to the acquisition as “Seward’s Folly,” after Secretary of State William H. Seward, who helped negotiate the agreement.

Fast-forward more than 150 years, and Alaska is our nation’s largest state, rich in natural resources, breathtaking landscapes, wildlife and history. 🏔️

We’re pretty sure if Ken had been practicing law in 1867, he would have looked at that contract and said:
“Wait… ALL of Alaska? For $7.2 million? Where do we sign?” 😂⚖️

Of course, one thing hasn’t changed in 159 years: READ THE FINE PRINT BEFORE YOU SIGN ANYTHING. 😉

On October 16, 1701, one of Connecticut’s most recognizable institutions began its story.

What we now know as Yale University was originally founded as the Collegiate School of Connecticut. The school later moved to New Haven in 1716, and in 1718 was renamed Yale College in honor of benefactor Elihu Yale. In 1886, it officially became Yale University. 🎓

More than 300 years later, Yale remains an important part of Connecticut’s history — and Attorney Ken Barber has been fortunate to have his own special connection to its traditions.

For years, Ken has had the honor of playing the bagpipes at Yale’s graduation ceremonies, helping mark one of the biggest milestones in the lives of graduating students. 🎶🎓

As a Connecticut law firm, we have a great appreciation for the history and institutions that have helped shape our state. And as an attorney, Ken knows there’s something particularly meaningful about watching a new generation of graduates head out into the world — even better when you get to send them off with the sound of the bagpipes! 😉

⚖️ SOME NATIONAL DAYS JUST HIT A LITTLE CLOSER TO HOME… 😂

Today is BE BALD AND BE FREE DAY!

And honestly, it would be irresponsible for the staff at Kenneth Barber & Associates to let this important occasion pass without recognizing our very own…

ATTORNEY KEN BARBER.
Yes. Ken is bald.
Very bald.
Professionally bald. 👨‍🦲⚖️😂

While the rest of us are dealing with haircuts, bad hair days, humidity, wind and figuring out what our hair is doing every morning, Ken wakes up completely UNBOTHERED.

Shampoo? Optional.
Comb? Irrelevant.
Bedhead? Impossible.
Windy day? Not Ken’s problem.

And after years of practicing law, Ken has learned an important lesson:
You don’t need hair to have a good head on your shoulders. 😂⚖️

So today, we celebrate Ken and bald heads everywhere!

Today, October 13, we celebrate the birthday of the United States Navy and more than two centuries of service, sacrifice and dedication to our country.

⚓ A little Navy history…

On October 13, 1775, during the American Revolution, the Continental Congress authorized the acquisition of armed vessels to intercept ships carrying supplies to British forces. This action is recognized as the birth of what would eventually become the United States Navy.

From those early ships of the Continental Navy to the modern fleet that serves around the world today, generations of sailors have answered the call to protect our nation and defend its interests at sea.

For 251 years, the men and women of the U.S. Navy have served with courage, commitment and sacrifice.

At Kenneth Barber & Associates, we are grateful to the sailors who are serving today, the veterans who served before them, and the families who support them from home.

COLUMBUS DAY — OUR OFFICE IS CLOSED

In observance of Columbus Day, Monday, October 12, the office of Kenneth Barber & Associates will be CLOSED. We will reopen for normal business hours on Tuesday.

📜 A little history behind the day:

Columbus Day commemorates the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas on October 12, 1492, after his voyage across the Atlantic under the sponsorship of the Spanish monarchy. The holiday became a federal observance in the United States in 1937 and has also historically been an important celebration of Italian-American heritage and contributions to the United States.

Today, the history and legacy of Columbus are viewed differently by many Americans. Some communities continue to observe Columbus Day, while others recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day, honoring the history, cultures and contributions of Indigenous peoples.

However you spend the day, we hope everyone in our community has a safe and enjoyable Monday.

On October 2, 1950, the beloved Peanuts comic strip made its debut, introducing the world to Charlie Brown and eventually giving us Snoopy, Lucy, Linus and the rest of the gang!

More than 75 years later, we’re pretty sure the Peanuts gang would fit right in at Kenneth Barber & Associates. ⚖️😂

🍁 Ken would obviously be Charlie Brown — trying to keep everyone on track while wondering how things got so chaotic.

📋 Our paralegals would be Lucy — we have answers, we have opinions, and yes, sometimes there is a fee for our advice. 😂

📚 Our attorneys might have a little Linus in them — always prepared and holding tightly to the documents they need.

🐶 And our office dog, Murphy? He’s clearly Snoopy. No explanation necessary. He’s probably the one actually running the place.
