As we get older, having trusted people around us can become increasingly important — family members, friends, healthcare providers, financial professionals and legal counsel who understand our wishes and can help us recognize when something doesn’t seem right.

Turning 18 comes with a lot of new independence—and a legal change parents may not always think about.

Once your child becomes a legal adult, being their parent doesn’t automatically give you the same authority to make decisions or access certain information on their behalf if something unexpected happens.

For a young adult heading to college, starting a career, traveling, or simply becoming more independent, documents such as a healthcare power of attorney and financial power of attorney can be important pieces of the conversation.

It’s not about taking away their independence. It’s about helping them decide who they want to step in and help if they can’t speak or act for themselves.

So while you’re checking off dorm supplies, textbooks, and everything else that comes with this next chapter, consider adding one more conversation to the list.
