Understanding how Oklahoma’s court system works can help you better navigate legal matters.

Our court system includes the Supreme Court, the Court of Criminal Appeals, the Court of Civil Appeals, 77 district courts and courts of limited jurisdiction.

District courts hear most cases, including civil matters like divorces and lawsuits, as well as criminal cases. Courts of limited jurisdiction handle issues like traffic tickets and city citations.

If a case is appealed (meaning someone asks a higher court to review a lower court’s decision), criminal cases go to the Court of Criminal Appeals, while civil cases go to the Court of Civil Appeals or the Supreme Court.

The University of Arkansas School of Law's Native American Law Student Association is partnering with Oklahoma Indian Legal Services (OILS) for a free legal clinic event to help enrolled tribal members who live in Oklahoma and meet certain income guidelines to prepare their wills and other important planning documents.
The event will be on Saturday, April 12, 2025 from 10am-2pm in the Rawls Room of the Tahlequah Public Library, 100 S. College Ave., Tahlequah, OK 74464.

***Reminder: The National Alert Test is Tomorrow***
On October 4th at 1:20 (CT), FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency) is conducting a nationwide test of the Wireless Emergency Alert System. Cell towers will broadcast the alert for 30 minutes and you may receive the test message anytime during those 30 minutes.
This can be a safety risk for those in abusive situations. During the test, phones may emit a loud noise and alert abusers to the location of hidden phones even if the phone is on silent. National alerts cannot be turned off on cell phones either.
If you or someone you know has a hidden emergency phone, please switch it off during the test.
