It was all hands - and paws! - on deck today at the Ed Isakson/Alpharetta Family YMCA North Fulton Special Needs Expo. 🐕‍🦺

We always love connecting with other special needs parents and caregivers, as well as community partners who support our families on this journey! We sincerely believe access to accurate legal information empowers families to make the best decisions for their children. ⚖️

A special thanks to Sprinkles, a service dog with Happy Tails Pet Therapy - who could honestly pass as Ranger's twin sister - for the laughs. (We're still not sure what they found so funny, but those smiles are everything!)😆

⚠️ If you're thinking about using an online estate plan service for your child with special needs, please read this first.

➡️ Online templates might seem quick and affordable, but they can create serious, irreversible problems especially when it comes to special needs planning.

Here’s why:

❌ They’re not designed for special needs trusts

Most online forms don’t properly protect eligibility for SSI, Medicaid or Medicaid waivers. One wrong word could disqualify your child from essential benefits.

❌ No personalization for your child’s situation

Every family’s needs are different. A generic document won’t account for therapies, caregivers, long-term housing, or government program rules.

❌ No guidance on funding the trust

A trust only works if it’s funded correctly. Online services rarely explain how to do this leaving families with a plan that doesn’t actually work.

❌ No help when laws change

Special needs and benefits laws change often. An online document won’t keep up and you won’t know what needs updating.

❌ No one to catch mistakes

There’s no attorney reviewing your plan, no one asking the right questions, and no one spotting critical errors until it’s too late.

❌ No approval from Georgia's Department of Behavior Health and Developmental Disabilites

Every single one of our Special Needs Trusts is reviewed and approved by the State. This seal of approval tells families that our firm has created a legally valid Special Needs Trust to help protect their child's benefits.

💡 A properly drafted Special Needs Trust isn’t just paperwork - it’s protection for your child’s future.

🎯 If your goal is to protect your child's government benefits, provide lifelong support, and avoid costly mistakes, this is one area where DIY can cost far more in the long run.

⚕️Logan's List Can Help Georgia Special Needs Families In Emergencies 🚑

Today, Attorney DJ Jeyaram added his son to his county's voluntary Logan's List database to help first responders identify and compassionately assist his son during an emergency.

The database is the result of Logan's Law (Georgia HB 631) passed in 2021 to help families whose loved ones may have communication and/or sensory challenges. The database is specifically designed for individuals who have "a physical, mental, or neurological condition which impedes his or her ability to communicate with any law enforcement officer or emergency responder."

Since Attorney Jeyaram's son is limited verbal and avoids loud noises (like sirens), the information provided in the database will help first responders better help his son during an emergency.

💡Families' participation is completely voluntary and the goal is simple: help first responders know more about an individual with a disability before they arrive on scene.

🕑 The entire process of adding Attorney Jeyaram's son to the database took less than five minutes.

Depending on the county, families will be asked to submit information such as:

✅ Name and nickname
✅ Date of birth
✅ Address and phone number
✅ Physical description (race, height, gender, hair color, eye color)
✅ Medical information, including medications
✅ Employer or school address

Some counties may also ask for information such as:
✅ Sensitivity to light or touch
✅ Whether the individual may hide or run
✅ Fear of police or uniforms
✅ Seizure conditions
✅ Possible triggers that could escalate an encounter
✅ Techniques or suggestions that help de-escalate a situation

Because each county implements its own database, the type of information collected will vary, as well as how the information is collected - ex. a phone call to the non-emergency line, a form on a Website, or an email.

🛑 Please note: Not all counties participate at this time.

➡️ To find out if your county participates in Logan's List, we've included a link to the non-emergency numbers for each county in the comments.

We're sharing this information about Logan’s List because supporting and protecting special needs families is at the heart of our mission. ⚖️💞
