SOMETIMES, BEING A GOOD ATTORNEY MEANS GOING THE EXTRA MILE—LITERALLY.

Not every client can come to our office.

Sometimes, a family needs legal assistance while a loved one is recovering in a nursing home or rehabilitation facility. Sometimes, time is limited, and circumstances simply don't allow them to follow the usual office appointment and signing procedures.

This recent 5-star Google review from Dennis reminded me why flexibility, responsiveness, and compassion are just as important as legal knowledge.

Dennis wrote:

What touched me most wasn't simply the five stars. It was knowing that we were able to accommodate a family's circumstances when they needed us.

In estate planning, we often work with elderly clients, individuals facing health challenges, and families dealing with unexpected situations. Their needs don't always fit neatly into our office schedule.

That sentence from a recent 5-star review means a great deal to me.

Think about it: this was not their first estate plan. It was their THIRD.

They had gone through the process before. They had signed estate planning documents before. Yet what stood out this time was something very basic:

To me, that is one of the most important parts of being an estate planning attorney.

Legal documents can be complicated. Trusts can contain dozens of pages of technical language. But my clients should not need a law degree to understand their own estate plan.

I often tell clients: Don't sign something simply because I am the lawyer and I prepared it. Ask me questions. Make me explain it. You should understand what will happen to your property, who will have authority if you become incapacitated, who will manage your Trust, and ultimately how your wishes will be carried out.

My job is to translate the law into something ordinary people can understand—and then make sure the documents actually reflect what they want.

Estate planning should be more than signing documents. It should be an education.

This new AVVO review caught my attention because the client described the experience as both “professional and educational.”

That word: "educational" means a lot to me.

When clients come to my office for a Living Trust, I don't want them simply to sign where I point and leave with a thick binder they may never fully understand.

I want them to understand:

- What does my Trust actually do?
- Who will manage things if I become incapacitated?
- What happens to my property when I pass away?
- Who receives what and when?
- Why are these documents necessary?

This client wrote that I “took the time to listen to our plan and explained clearly legal terms to make sure I understood every part of my estate plan.”

That's exactly how I believe estate planning should be done.

A lawyer can prepare the documents. But ultimately, you are the one making the decisions about your family, your property, and your legacy. You deserve to understand those decisions before signing anything.

And I particularly appreciate the last part of the review:

Those words from a client always mean a lot to me.

This latest 5-star review came from a conservatorship matter, an area of law that is very different from simply preparing documents. Families often come to me because someone they love needs protection, and they are trying to understand a court process that can feel unfamiliar and overwhelming.

For every K-1 case, filing the petition is only part of our job.

Before the actual U.S. Consulate interview, I personally conduct a mock interview with the client—and I intentionally make it difficult.

I ask detailed questions.

Some approvals are especially meaningful because they represent more than just one successful case. They represent a relationship and trust built over many years.

I have had the privilege of working with this family for nearly 10 years.

It started when the husband was preparing to travel to Vietnam to marry his future wife. We later handled her K-1 Fiancé Visa, brought her to the United States, and assisted with her Adjustment of Status after they married.

Years passed. She eventually became a U.S. citizen.
