Hidden deep within the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Southern Cascades is a fox. Sometimes red or silver or even black, the Sierra Nevada red fox is an elusive creature. It makes its home in snowy, rugged and often difficult to access areas. Yes, these foxes are hard to find, and their numbers remain uncertain.

Thankfully, wildlife researchers don’t give up that easily. Trail cameras are one way to track foxes, setting them up in potentially high wildlife-traffic areas – another way is through s**t! The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife launched a volunteer s**t collection program, which we participate in by helping pick up possible fox p**p and then sending it to experts who use the s**t to estimate population sizes and the genetic health of foxes.
