🌤️ Monday Motivation 🌤️

TIMSHEL — Thou Mayest.

One of my all-time favorite books is East of Eden by John Steinbeck. With the new Netflix adaptation bringing the story back into the spotlight, I’ve been thinking about how the series last episode ended - Timshel. Something I never connected when I read the book years ago.

One little word. Timshel.

In the book, Steinbeck talks about the Hebrew word found in Genesis 4:7, in the story of Cain and Abel. He interprets timshel to mean, “thou mayest.”

Not “thou shalt.”

Not “thou must.”

Thou MAYEST.

There is a lot of power in those two words.

You have a choice.

You may overcome. You may do better. You may choose good over evil. You may change the direction of your life.

But having the ability to choose doesn’t mean we will choose well. We still have to make the choice.

And isn’t that what so much of life comes down to? The choices we make every single day.

💼 Professionally: In real estate, and really in any profession, we are constantly faced with choices. We can choose integrity when cutting corners would be easier. We can choose to serve people instead of simply trying to sell something. We can choose to do the right thing, even when it costs us. We can choose to keep learning and growing instead of settling for what we’ve always done.

Success isn’t always about the opportunities we are given. Sometimes it’s about what we choose to do with those opportunities.

❤️ Personally: We don’t get to choose everything that happens to us. Boy, have I been reminded of that lately!

We can’t control other people’s actions, unexpected circumstances, or even the consequences of some of our past decisions. But we can choose how we respond.

We can choose forgiveness over bitterness. Gratitude over complaining. Growth over regret.

And sometimes we have to choose those things over and over again because yesterday’s good attitude doesn’t automatically carry over into today.

At least mine doesn’t! 😂

✝️ Spiritually: This is where timshel speaks to me the most.

God created us with the ability to choose. He doesn’t force us to love Him, follow Him, or obey Him. He invites us to.

Every day, we have the opportunity to choose His ways over our own.

Genesis 4:7 reminds us that sin desires to rule over us, but we are called to master it. That doesn’t mean we can do it all on our own. We need God’s grace, wisdom, and strength.

But we still have a responsibility to make the choice.

I’ve made plenty of wrong choices in my life. Some I wish I could go back and change.

But I can’t.

And neither can you.

What we CAN do is decide what comes next.

That’s what I love about timshel. It reminds me that our past doesn’t have to dictate our future. Our circumstances don’t have to determine our character. And just because we’ve always done something one way doesn’t mean we have to keep doing it that way.

We may choose differently. We may choose better. We may choose to become who God created us to be.

But we have to CHOOSE.

So here’s my question for you this Monday:

What is one choice you can make today that will move you closer to the person God is calling you to become?

Thou mayest. 💚

Well, I think we can all agree that cutting my own hair is NOT a good idea! 😂✂️

But neither is buying a house without a professional on your side!

Just because you CAN do something yourself doesn’t mean you always SHOULD! 🤣

I’ll leave the haircuts to the professionals, and you can leave the real estate to us! 🏡💚

💚 Monday Motivation 💚

Last week, I got stung by a wasp while filling my birdfeeders.

It is amazing how much pain one tiny creature can cause. One little sting and my arm swelled up. It ached for days. First it was red and burning hot, then came the itching. All of that from one tiny little POP!

And as I was nursing my poor arm, I started thinking… isn’t that how our words can be?

One little comment.
One sarcastic remark.
One impatient response.
One sentence spoken without thinking.

It may seem small to the person saying it, but it can leave a sting that lasts much longer for the person receiving it.

And I’ll admit, this one hits close to home for me. I am a talker. 😂 Sometimes my mouth gets several steps ahead of my brain. I can say something and only afterward think, Well… maybe that didn’t come out exactly like I meant it.

But intentions don’t always erase impact.

“The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” — Proverbs 12:18

Professionally, our words matter. In real estate, emotions can already be high. Buyers are nervous. Sellers are stressed. Agents are juggling a hundred things. One careless email, text, or comment can damage a relationship we’ve spent months or even years building. Sometimes wisdom looks like typing the response…and waiting a few minutes before hitting send.

Personally, the people we love the most are often the ones who get the least-filtered version of us. We can be patient with a stranger and then snap at our spouse, children, friends, or coworkers. Familiarity shouldn’t give us permission to be careless with someone’s heart.

And spiritually, Scripture repeatedly reminds us that our words have power. We can use them to encourage, comfort, correct with love, and build others up—or we can leave a sting.

Now, after my wasp incident, Allen decided to protect the woman he loves by literally torching those wasps. 🔥😂 And I’m pretty sure he enjoyed taking them out just a little too much.

Unfortunately, that is NOT the biblical solution when people sting us. 😂

We don’t get to torch people who hurt us. We are called to respond differently—with grace, wisdom, forgiveness, and self-control.

So this week, I’m reminding myself to slow down long enough to ask:

Does this need to be said?
Does it need to be said this way?
And will my words leave healing…or a sting?

Because sometimes the smallest words can leave the biggest mark.

Choose them wisely. 💚
