Her father placed her in psychiatric care to protect her, not knowing a hospital employee with prior complaints from coworkers still had full access to patients.
Mr. Blanks, a 55-year-old tech at Pontiac General, was taking an 18-year-old patient into the "quiet room" on more than one occasion, while she had no legal capacity to consent. When the case broke on the news, a former nurse came forward saying she had reported him before. Attorney Ali Koussan had her sign an affidavit before anyone could silence her.
Blanks was ultimately arrested and served jail time, while the hospital that kept him on staff despite those complaints continued to fight in court to limit what the jury could award.
