Her father placed her in psychiatric care to protect her, not knowing a hospital employee with prior complaints from coworkers still had full access to patients.

Mr. Blanks, a 55-year-old tech at Pontiac General, was taking an 18-year-old patient into the "quiet room" on more than one occasion, while she had no legal capacity to consent. When the case broke on the news, a former nurse came forward saying she had reported him before. Attorney Ali Koussan had her sign an affidavit before anyone could silence her.

Blanks was ultimately arrested and served jail time, while the hospital that kept him on staff despite those complaints continued to fight in court to limit what the jury could award.

A $3,000 settlement offer. A $14.95 million verdict. Here's what happened in between.

A hospital employee with prior complaints took advantage of an 18-year-old psychiatric patient who, due to severe childhood trauma, was under legal guardianship and legally incapable of giving consent. The hospital's response was to frame it as medical malpractice to limit what the jury could award.

Ali Koussan of Koussan Law reframed it as negligent hiring and supervision. The case ended with a $14.95 million verdict.

Giving back is something we take seriously at Marko Law. Last month, members of our team headed over to the Ronald McDonald House of Detroit to volunteer and spend some time supporting the families staying there.

The Ronald McDonald House provides a place to stay for families with seriously ill children receiving treatment nearby. Being able to show up for that community, even in a small way, means a lot to us.

πŸŽ™οΈ Episode 75 of Cases Gone Wild is HERE! πŸŽ™οΈ

Jon Marko sits down with Ali Koussan of Koussan Law to break down one of the most disturbing cases we've ever covered: an 18-year-old psychiatric patient was violated by a hospital employee who had prior complaints on record and never should have been near vulnerable patients.

What started as a $3,000 settlement offer ended in a $14.95 million verdict. This episode covers the surveillance footage that exposed the truth, the defense argument that stunned the courtroom, and the fight to hold an institution accountable when it failed the person who trusted it most.

βš–οΈ Iminski v. Jones & First Student, Inc. Highlight βš–οΈ

In this final deposition clip from the Iminski case, Brian's coworker confirms what the crash cost him at work. Before, Brian was the person who stayed late without being asked. After, he was absent constantly and unable to carry the same responsibilities he once handled without a second thought.

One crash. One bus that ran a red light. And a man who went from the first one in and the last one out, to someone who could no longer show up the way he always had.

βš–οΈ Iminski v. Jones & First Student, Inc. Highlight βš–οΈ

In this deposition clip, Brian's coworker describes what it was like working alongside him before and after the crash.

Before, they were a team. Brian could juggle customers, phone calls, and a keyboard all at once without missing a beat. After, he could barely follow a conversation. His coworker's word for it: "space cadet."

That is the kind of testimony no medical chart can replicate. It is the human cost of what happened, told by someone who lived it alongside him.

For some people, a job is just a job. Brian's treating physician made it clear to the jury that for Brian, it ran much deeper than that.

Brian took pride in what he did. His work was tied to his identity, his sense of purpose, and his place in the world around him. He wanted to show up, contribute, and be part of life. Work was how he did that.

Understanding that is what separates a number on a page from a verdict that reflects the full weight of what someone lost.

Most people pick a career. Plaintiff attorneys pick a fight worth having.

Mark Bernstein breaks down what makes this work different: every case is a chance to hold a corporation, a government, or an insurance company accountable, and the impact lands directly on the person who needed it most. This is why it matters, and why showing up every day is worth it.
