Is clean water a constitutional right?

A federal appeals court just said no, ruling that the U.S. Constitution doesn't guarantee citizens the right to clean drinking water or the right to truthful information from officials during a public health crisis. Todd Flood joined FOX 2 Detroit to unpack the due process and bodily integrity arguments at the heart of the case, and why he believes the courts got it wrong.

Back-to-school season presents a good opportunity to ensure your kids are equipped with the habits and knowledge to stay safe throughout the school day. Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind:

1. Make sure your children know their full names, your phone number, home addresses, and how to reach a trusted adult. A laminated safety card kept in their backpack with this info, plus any medical conditions, can be a good addition.

2. Teach and reinforce proper hand-washing, and remind them not to share food or drink. These simple habits go a long way toward keeping illnesses from spreading through the classroom.

3. A backpack should weigh no more than 15% of your child's body weight, and both straps should always be used to evenly distribute the load on your child’s back. An overstuffed bag can cause real strain over time.

4. Talk with your child about bullying — how to recognize it, how to report it, and who their designated trusted adult at school is if they ever feel unsafe or need help.

5. Avoid putting your child's first name on the outside of backpacks or lunch boxes; initials or names on the inside are a safer option for labeling belongings.

At-school safety is a collective effort, and taking precautions for your students can help keep students across your community safe.

As always, if you have questions or other needs this school year, give us a call. We are here for you.

Labor Day weekend is one of the busiest travel periods of the year, and with increased traffic often comes a higher risk of impaired driving incidents. At Flood Law, we encourage everyone in the Detroit community to prioritize safety when making holiday plans.

If your celebrations include alcohol, we strongly recommend arranging a safe ride in advance. Using a rideshare service, designating a driver, or planning to stay overnight are simple steps that can help prevent serious accidents and protect others on the road.

Please note that our office will be closed on Labor Day. We will reopen Tuesday morning and be ready to assist with any personal injury or legal needs.

We wish you and your family a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend.

Today, Lucie Ptasznik, owner of High Vibe Trail Rides, is focused on rebuilding her business in Milford.

On Wednesday, 36 of her horses were returned, three weeks after Oakland County Animal Control seized them following a bogus complaint of neglect, despite its own positive health assessment of the horses just weeks earlier.

WXYZ-TV Channel 7 captured the emotional reunion.

The horses are home.

This morning, more than 30 horses seized from High Vibe Trail Rides in Milford were returned to their owner, Lucie Ptasznik, after Oakland County declined to pursue forfeiture and no charges were filed.

What started with a bogus complaint turned Lucie’s life and business upside down. Her horses were taken from her, she lost business contracts, and both she and her employees faced severe harassment.

After everything Lucie and her team endured, today marks an important step toward making things right.
