The insurance company offered you a settlement. Should you take it?

After an accident, receiving a settlement offer can feel like a relief.

But accepting an offer is a significant decision—and once a settlement is finalized, you may be giving up the ability to pursue additional compensation for the same claim.

Before accepting an offer, it's important to understand what you're actually being compensated for.

Have you completed treatment?

Do you understand the full extent of your injuries?

What medical expenses have you incurred?

Have you missed work or lost income?

Could you need additional treatment in the future?

These questions can be especially important when an injury is serious or ongoing.

An insurance company's first offer isn't necessarily a reflection of the full impact an accident has had on your life.

That doesn't mean every settlement offer is unfair. It means you should understand your claim and your options before making a decision that may be difficult—or impossible—to undo.

When it comes to settlement offers, don't let pressure to resolve things quickly replace careful consideration.

If you're involved in a lawsuit, you may eventually hear your attorney mention a "deposition."

So what exactly is it?

A deposition is a formal process where a person answers questions under oath before trial.

Depending on the case, the person being questioned could be a plaintiff, defendant, witness, expert, or another individual with relevant information.

Depositions can help attorneys understand the facts of a case, identify areas of agreement or disagreement, and preserve testimony that may become important later.

For someone who has never experienced one, the idea of answering questions under oath can feel intimidating.

That's why preparation matters.

Your attorney can explain what to expect, review the types of questions you may encounter, and help you understand how to approach the process.

A deposition isn't a trial.

But it is an important part of many lawsuits—and what happens during one can matter later in the case.

A hit-and-run can leave you shocked, frustrated, and unsure about what to do.

If you're involved in one, start with safety.

Even if the other driver is never identified, there may still be insurance-related questions and legal options to explore.

The moments immediately following a hit-and-run can be overwhelming. Taking a few minutes to document what you can may help preserve important information later.

You've probably heard it in movies:

“You have the right to remain silent…”

But real-life Miranda rights don't work quite the way television makes it seem.

The requirement to provide Miranda warnings generally applies to custodial interrogation—not automatically every interaction someone has with law enforcement.

And if Miranda wasn't properly given when required, that doesn't necessarily mean the entire criminal case disappears.

Instead, it can affect whether certain statements made during a custodial interrogation can be used by prosecutors.

The details matter.

Whether someone was in custody, whether they were being interrogated, what was said, and the circumstances surrounding the interaction can all be important.

If you're facing criminal charges, don't rely on what you've seen on television to understand your rights.

The law is more complicated—and your individual circumstances matter.

"I feel fine.” Do I still need to see a doctor after an accident?

Not every injury announces itself immediately.

After a crash, adrenaline can make it difficult to recognize pain or other symptoms right away. Some injuries may become more noticeable hours or even days later.

That's why it's important to pay attention to how you're feeling after an accident and seek medical attention when appropriate—even if you initially feel okay.

A medical evaluation can help identify injuries, provide appropriate treatment, and create documentation of what you're experiencing.

And if symptoms develop later, don't ignore them simply because you felt fine at the scene.

Your health should always come first after an accident.

If you've been injured, keeping track of your symptoms, medical appointments, treatment, and expenses can also help provide a clearer picture of what happened and how the accident has affected you.

The first priority after a crash isn't figuring out your legal case.

It's taking care of yourself.

Michigan's No-Fault system may provide benefits through your own auto insurance policy for certain expenses resulting from a motor vehicle accident.

Depending on the circumstances and your coverage, those benefits can include medical expenses and certain wage-loss benefits.

But serious injuries can raise additional legal questions.

Depending on the facts of the accident and the nature of the injuries, an injured person may also have a claim against the at-fault driver.

Determining what benefits may be available—and what claims you may have—can depend on the details of your accident, your insurance coverage, and the applicable law.

That's why understanding Michigan's No-Fault system is so important.

Michigan Law Explained is our ongoing effort to make complicated legal concepts easier to understand and help Michigan residents know what questions to ask when they need legal guidance.

❤️ When a loved one dies because of someone else's negligence, the questions can feel endless.

How did this happen?

Who is responsible?

What happens to the family's financial future?

And what can possibly be done now?

A wrongful death claim cannot undo the loss of a loved one. But it may provide a way for surviving family members to seek accountability and address some of the financial consequences of an unexpected death.

Depending on the circumstances, damages may involve medical and funeral expenses, loss of financial support, loss of companionship, and other losses recognized under Michigan law.

But behind every legal claim is a family trying to navigate an unimaginable loss.

At Neumann Law Group, we understand that these cases require more than knowledge of the law. They require compassion, careful attention, and an understanding of what families are going through.

When there's no way to change what happened, having someone help you understand what comes next can matter.

What an awesome evening at Michigan Animal Rescue League’s “Yappy Hour”!

Nearly 600 people came together to support those without a voice, and it was truly inspiring to see so many animal lovers show up for such an important cause.

I’m incredibly proud to have Neumann Law Group sponsor and be part of such a wonderful animal rescue organization. If you’re looking for a way to help, check out their facilities, consider making a donation, and of course—adopt, don’t shop!

Thank you to everyone who made this special evening possible! ❤️🐾

It's understandable to think that if you simply tell the court your side of the story, everything will work itself out.

But the criminal justice system has rules and procedures that can be difficult to navigate without legal knowledge.

What you say, when you say it, what evidence is presented, and how legal arguments are made can all matter.

An attorney's role isn't simply to speak for you. It's to help you understand the charges you're facing, explain your options, identify potential issues with the case, and advocate for your interests throughout the process.

Facing criminal charges can be intimidating enough without trying to figure out the legal system on your own.

Understanding your rights and having someone who knows the process in your corner can make a significant difference.
