Over an average 8-year period, that adds up to nearly $19,000, and if you’re resetting into a new 30-year term, it could mean over $52,000 in extra lifetime costs. With today’s slower housing market, lenders have relied more on refinancing revenue, often targeting older homeowners with strong equity for cash-out options. For those on fixed incomes, that extra interest can quickly eat into retirement funds or reduce the equity you hoped to leave to loved ones. I always encourage comparing offers from at least three lenders and being extra careful about who’s reaching out. Refinancing can be beneficial—whether it’s lowering your monthly costs or making room for needed updates—but as with every big move, knowledge and careful planning make all the difference.
