Summer might be winding down, but we're riding high about the great time we had with our law clerks from Drake University Law School and The University of Iowa College of Law! πŸŽ‰

They jumped right in from day one, working alongside our attorneys, learning the ropes and getting a real feel for life at a law firm. Before they headed back to school, we celebrated with an afternoon at Topgolf, and a visit with the Iowa Center for Children's Justice, where they learned about the organization's mission in our community and even made friendship bracelets together.

Programs like this one are how we invest in the next generation of attorneys. It's an investment that goes both ways. We learn just as much from our clerks over the summer, and we appreciate everything they brought to the team. (😎We do hope the daily whiteboard Q&A returns in 2027.)

Good luck this school year, we're cheering you on! πŸ‘

Thinking about buying a house with your partner but not married yet? In Iowa, you don't get the same legal protections that married couples do if things change down the road.

Before you make an offer, have an honest conversation about three things: who's putting in the money, how the title will be held, and what happens if you break up.

Attorney Sydnee Waggoner breaks down what unmarried homebuyers need to know to protect themselves and their investment.

Two more weeks in the books for our 2026 summer associates, and this stretch might have been the busiest yet!

The highlight? Our summer associates stepped up to the front of the room and delivered caselaw updates as part of continuing legal education sessions for several of our practice groups, including litigation, real estate, and estate, tax, and probate. Researching recent decisions is one thing. Presenting them to a room full of lawyers is another, and they handled it like pros, including the Q&A and commentary afterward.

They also sat down for a cup of coffee at Happy Home Coffee with our associate attorneys to talk about what law school doesn't teach: how to market yourself, both inside the firm and out in the community. Building a practice starts with building relationships, and it's never too early to learn how. They have the tools to flex those marketing muscles when they return to The University of Iowa College of Law and Drake University Law School.

And because no two weeks at Whitfield & Eddy Law are complete without good food and better company, our attorneys and summer associates gathered for dinner together at Eatery A. Great conversation, plenty of laughs, and another chance for this class to feel at home here.

What truly makes this group unique is how they work together and engage the firm in thoughtful and fun conversations with their weekly whiteboard Q&A project.

The summer is flying by, but this group isn't slowing down.

Big news at Whitfield & Eddy Law! πŸŽ‰

We're excited to welcome Molly Kottmeyer to the firm as our new Deputy General Counsel.

Molly spent eleven years working alongside the Chief Justice of the Iowa Supreme Court, then built her own practice helping nonprofit organizations. Now she's bringing all of that experience to a brand new leadership role here, where she'll help guide the firm's future, our technology, and our growing team of attorneys.

"In addition to being well known and respected in the Iowa legal community, she brings great energy and talent to the firm," said Executive Committee Chair John Moorlach.

Welcome, Molly! We're so glad you're here. πŸ‘

Sometimes life throws a family a curveball. Illness, deployment, or the loss of a parent can leave a child needing a trusted adult to step in. In Iowa, minor guardianship makes that possible.

Our latest publication answers the questions families ask most: When is guardianship needed? Who can serve as a guardian? What does the process look like?

Family law attorney Katelyn Kurt helps Iowa families work through these decisions with care and compassion.

Where did June go?! We can't believe how fast the first month has flown by with our 2026 summer associate class: Kathryn, Gracie, and Emma from Drake University Law School, and Caroline and Carey from The University of Iowa College of Law.

These five have been everywhere this month. Client meetings, depositions, legal research with our attorneys, and even court appearances. From the conference room to the courtroom, they've been in the middle of the action.

And it hasn't been all work! They've jumped into The Iowa State Bar Association and Polk County Bar Association activities, plus plenty of social events around the firm and the community. Last week's group dinner at Lucca with our associate attorneys was a highlight, and we're pretty sure the conversation was as good as the food.

Our summer program comes down to one simple idea: summer associates learn best by doing real work with attorneys who care about their growth. One month in, this class is proving us right.

Here's to a great July. Your calendar is PACKED!
