Did you know? It’s illegal to park, stand, or stop a car in a bike lane anywhere in Colorado. Only exception is to comply with police order, traffic signal, or avoid conflict with other vehicle.

HB26-1237 made it a statewide Class B traffic infraction — fine up to $100. Before that, it was a patchwork of local rules.

Why it matters: a blocked bike lane forces riders into traffic@or dangerous obstacles. That’s how people get hurt. And if a driver in the bike lane caused your crash, they were breaking the law — that’s evidence of fault.

Denver is now considering cameras to ticket bike-lane blockers. The proposal goes before a City Council committee today, October 7.

First Waymo. Next Zoox? The wave to autonomous vehicles is revving up in Colorado.

Spotted in Denver: a Zoox autonomous test vehicle. They’re running a small fleet here this winter to train the system on snow and bad weather — safety drivers behind the wheel for now.

Here’s what interests me as a bike lawyer: autonamous vehicles are trained to detect cyclists. But are they safer and when one doesn’t detect you or causes injury, who’s at fault? The company is still repsonsible if the vehicle is to blame for a crash.

The technology is evolving fast. Can it keep up with a real Colorado winter?

Don’t ask a chatbot whether your head injury needs a doctor or if you have a brain injury.

A new study tested 325 answers to 65 common concussion questions from 5 AI chatbots. 27 responses were potentially harmful for things like telling people to stay home instead of the ER, clearing them to drive too soon, and overly reassuring them about brain injury findings.
An AI chatbot is not a replacement for a qualified medical professional examining you and explaining medical situations to you. Plus it won’t help your claim for compensation later to say the chatbot said you were fine when you later learn that’s not the case. Concussions and TBIs are too serious and too complex to leave it to a chatbot. Play it safe and smart. Hit your head in a bike crash but felt “fine”? Please read this. 🚴

A lot of cyclists shrug off the warning signs of a brain injury after a crash causing injury. This can delay healing and hurt a claim for compensation later. A brain injury is serious — signs are different for each person and can show up hours or even days later. A fall that may seem minor or a slight blow could cause a bleed even if you can walk and talk after. Be safe. Get checked by a doctor.

Signs cyclists often ignore:

• Headaches
• Brain fog or trouble concentrating
• Dizziness or balance issues
• Sleep changes — sleeping way more or less
• Mood shifts, irritability, easy to anger
• Sensitivity to light or noise

These are just some of the common signs of a concussion or brain injury. There are many more than these. Be sure to always get checked by a doctor after a bike crash even if you don’t think you hit your head and even if you feel like it’s not a big deal. Getting things documented and treated early matters for your health and for any claim down the road.

Tomorrow I’m riding 100 miles in the Denver Century Ride — through my own city and thousand of other cyclists. So stoked!

The route passes right by my office in RiNo. These are the same roads I commute and train on every week. The difference tomorrow: no cars. Just bikes taking over Denver. This is how safe these streets could feel every day for cyclists. Imagine what it would be like if city cycling was the priority instead of cars.

Today is the first official day of fall. Vibrant displays of color dot the Colorado landscape as plants begin to shed their leaves for winter. Cyclists are feeling the end of the outdoor riding season as temps drop and they prepare for indoor riding to escape the cold. The good news is there is still plenty of time to fit in more riding.

Steamboat to Stagecoach Gravel Ride

This 48 mile ride with 3,200 feet of elevation gain leaves Steamboat Springs from the based of the ski mountain and heads to Stagecoach State Park in Oak Creek, Colorado, via Route 14, 14E, 14B, and 18. There is a mix of pavement and gravel, and possibly some mud depending on recent rain. While leaving Steamboat you will ride through the Yampa Valley passing the rolling hills of many beautiful ranches. Instead of entering the park via the main entrance you will use the gravel road known as Route 18 that traverses along the Yampa River, Blacktail Mountain and the Sarvis Wilderness. You will enter the park via the dam access at the east side of the reservoir.

The gravel loop around Stagecoach Reservoir is about 10 miles of flowing smooth gravel with minimal elevation gain. There is a short section where you leave the gravel for pavement at the west side of the reservoir onto Route 14 and 16 and return to back onto the gravel loop at Elk Run Trail.
