For nonprofits with a calendar year fiscal year end, most states expect renewals starting between May and July, and many of them require a completed or drafted 990 to move forward. A late federal filing doesn't just affect your IRS standing, it will ripple outward into state deadlines, late fees, and potential lapses in good standing.

The IRS Form 990 deadline falls on May 15th for nonprofits whose fiscal year ended with the calendar year. (And extended deadline for organizations whose fiscal year ends June 30.)

Filing on time keeps your organization in good standing! Many states pull directly from IRS records to verify your nonprofit's status. Review your data thoroughly, and check that your legal name, EIN, and address on file with the federal government matches what's on file with the states where you're registered to fundraise. A mismatched, lapsed or a late filing can create compliance headaches down the road.

Some nonprofits in California are facing potential loss of access to donations and grants because of clerical errors on the state's charity registry. Proposed new legislation of AB 2221 would require faster processing, fair notice before any delinquency status, and a modernized filing system.
