Happy National Hispanic Heritage Month! This month is a time to celebrate the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions of our Latinx neighbors and honor those whose stories and achievements have helped shape our country and our great state!
Did you know…
-Spanish explorers and Mexican families were among the first non-Indigenous people to settle in the Denver area.
-Latinx residents make up about 34% of Denver’s population, deeply shaping the city's neighborhoods, culture, arts, and civics.
-Federico Peña served as Denver's first Hispanic mayor from 1983 to 1991 and initiated the Denver International Airport Project in 1983, securing the land from Adams County and beginning construction in 1989.
-Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzales helped turn Denver into a major center for the Chicano Civil Rights Movement in the 1960’s, which fought for equality, safe working conditions, and an end to systemic racism.
✨ Here’s to celebrating the people, cultures, and heritage that continue to enrich our communities. ✨
