Can one parent have sole parental responsibilities in Colorado?

Yes, but Colorado courts separate parenting time from decision-making authority. One parent may have sole decision-making responsibility without having all parenting time.

Courts look at the child’s best interests and may consider concerns such as domestic violence, substance use, abuse, coercive control, or other issues that affect the child’s safety and well-being.

Requests to significantly limit the other parent’s parenting time usually require clear facts and evidence.

Relocation can have a significant impact on existing parenting arrangements, especially when a move affects schedules, school routines, or the other parent’s ability to maintain consistent parenting time.

In Colorado, relocation requests involving children are often evaluated carefully, with the court considering factors related to the child’s best interests, stability, relationships, and the practical impact of the move. Even moves within the state can sometimes raise important legal and logistical questions depending on the circumstances.

Because relocation issues can quickly become complex, it is important to understand how a proposed move may affect current court orders before making major decisions.

During stressful or transitional periods, routines can create a greater sense of stability and predictability for both parents and children. Clear expectations around schedules, communication, responsibilities, and daily structure can help reduce confusion and minimize unnecessary conflict.

Consistency does not have to mean perfection. Even small routines can help create a calmer and more manageable environment over time.

Back-to-school season brings a lot of moving pieces for co-parents, and a little planning now can prevent a lot of stress later. Here are three things we often recommend to clients navigating this season together.

Share the school details early. Teacher contact information, class schedules, supply lists, and important dates should reach both households directly from the school when possible, not filtered through one parent. This keeps the responsibility off any single person and off the fear that a missed date is a decision.

Aim for consistency in the day-to-day routines, even across two homes. Bedtimes, homework expectations, and morning schedules don’t need to be identical, but wide gaps between households can be hard on young children who are still adjusting to a new grade and a new year. A brief conversation between parents about what’s working can go a long way.

Where possible, present a united front for your child. Attending school events together, or simply making sure your child hears support from both parents, reinforces that they haven’t lost anything in the process, even as their family looks different.

Co-parenting well during a transition like this takes intention, and we see families do it successfully every day. If you have questions about how your parenting plan addresses school-related decisions, our team is here to help.

Many people are unaware that certain court-ordered restrictions automatically go into effect as soon as a divorce or custody case is filed in Colorado. These Temporary Automatic Injunctions are designed to help maintain stability while a case is ongoing and can impact finances, parenting matters, communication, and insurance coverage.

Because these rules apply immediately, it is possible to violate them without realizing it. Actions involving major financial decisions, out-of-state travel with children, changes to insurance policies, or communication that escalates conflict can all create serious legal consequences during a case.

Understanding these injunctions early can help individuals avoid unnecessary complications and better protect their position moving forward.

We recently shared a new blog breaking down what Temporary Automatic Injunctions are, what they prohibit, and why they matter in Colorado family law cases.

Debt is one of the most overlooked parts of the divorce process, yet it can have long-term financial consequences well after a case is finalized. In Colorado, debt acquired during a marriage may still be considered marital debt, even if only one spouse’s name is attached to the account.

Understanding the difference between marital and separate debt, reviewing financial records carefully, and staying proactive about credit and payments can make a meaningful difference during the division process. Decisions made during this stage can continue to affect future financial stability, credit access, and overall flexibility moving forward.

We recently shared a new blog breaking down how debt is typically handled in a Colorado divorce, including practical considerations and steps individuals can take to better protect themselves financially.
