He notes that “Respectability is a spectrum,” and while courts often say to “dress respectfully,” expectations can range from business casual in federal and urban courts to more relaxed standards in smaller counties. The consistent theme is showing that you are taking the process seriously.

Shelby also emphasizes a practical rule of thumb: “Aim for neutral, clean, and unremarkable. The goal isn’t to impress anyone. It’s to avoid becoming the story before the case even starts.”
