A little history if you will allow. Top left picture is where my 5th great grandfather Rev George Vandiver received his pension for fighting in the American Revolution and giving him land in the late 1700’s in the Wilderness of NE GA now known as Habersham and Rabun. He received 1500 acres from the forks of the Chattooga River and Tallulah Rivers on the SC line Westward to the small village of Tallulah. The top right picture shows where Ga Power tore down my ancestor Vandivers home at the forks of the rivers to build Tugalo lake in 1918. Bottom left pic is me standing on the SC side of the Tugalo River and the bottom right picture shows the River which flows into Lake Hartwell and from there forms the Savannah River and flows into the Atlantic Ocean at Savannah. In the late 1700’s to the early 1900’s my ancestors the Vandivers and Shirley’s ran stores along the River and they would take flat bottom boats all the way to Savannah every summer to buy store provisions and they would push their boats up the River by poles to Augusta where they would hire teams of Oxen to haul them up the River to the now Toccoa area and unload and transfer their goods by wagon to their trading posts/stores. But when the River was dammed in the early 1900’s to build the many lakes in NE GA it changed the lives of hundreds of pioneers living on the frontier along with the local native Americans. If this isn’t too boring then more to follow soon.
