Countdown to 250: Great Americans, Great Stories

For our third featured founder, we are honored to highlight John Hancock, whose contributions to American independence helped lay the foundation of our nation.

John Hancock (1737–1793)

John Hancock was an American merchant, patriot, and statesman who played a prominent role in the American Revolution. As president of the Second Continental Congress, he was the first to sign the Declaration of Independence, and his large, distinctive signature became one of the most recognized symbols of the nation's founding. Hancock's name became so closely associated with signing documents that “John Hancock” is still used today as a synonym for a signature.

Hancock was a wealthy and influential leader in colonial Massachusetts and a strong supporter of the movement for independence from Great Britain. As president of the Continental Congress, he helped guide the colonies during a critical period in their struggle for freedom. His signature appeared prominently on early printed copies of the Declaration of Independence, helping make him one of the best-known figures of the Revolutionary era. Hancock later served as governor of Massachusetts and remained an important political leader until his death in 1793.

As our second individual who made such an impact on our great country's independence and foundation we want to highlight John Adams.

John Adams (1735-1826)

John Adams, the second President of the United States, was a leading figure in the American Revolution and one of the nation’s most influential Founding Fathers. A brilliant lawyer, diplomat, and political thinker, he played a crucial role in securing American independence and helping establish the framework of the new republic.

Adams’ greatest legacy may be his unwavering commitment to the rule of law and the principles of representative government. As president, he guided the young nation through a period of international tension and political division while maintaining American independence and stability. His lifelong dedication to liberty, public service, and the Constitution earned him a lasting place among the most important architects of the United States.

As we approach the 250th Anniversary of our great country, we wanted to highlight some of those individuals who made such an impact at the time.

George Washington (1732–1799)

Known as the “Father of His Country,” George Washington led the Continental Army to victory in the American Revolution and became the first U.S. president. His leadership helped establish the foundations of the new nation and its government.

Washington’s greatest legacy may be the example he set as the nation’s first president. Through his leadership, he helped establish important traditions and norms that shaped the presidency and influenced the development of American government for generations.
